This paper argues in favor of the hypothesis that the so-called figurative and literal 

meanings of verbs share a common core meaning that constitutes the semantic base of verbs across contexts. I argue for an underspecification model of the lexicon and take the Spanish change of state verb romper ‘break’ as a case study. It is shown that the meaning variation of romper-VPs is correlated with the semantics of the theme in two ways: 1) whether and how exactly the theme is affected by the change and 2) whether the theme has a simple or a complex mereological structure. I thus analyze romper in terms of a simple scalar change, for which the exact dimension of change depends on the properties of the theme argument. The study is taken as precursor for the analysis of lexical entailments of change of state verbs in composition and aims at showing that what has often been denominated metaphoric extensions or non-regular polysemy can be analyzed alike through an underspecification approach. The present paper represents a view of lexicon that goes against a trivial and static conception of lexical meaning.

The debate over the relation between grammatically relevant (specifically, what we term event referential) and idiosyncratic aspects of verb meaning has produced a considerable literature. Some authors, such as Levin and Rappaport Hovav, have appealed to figurative uses of verbs as a source of data when the analysis of their literal uses has been controversial, a move that has sometimes been criticized. However, the question of whether figurative uses of verbs preserve the event referential properties of their literal counterparts and are therefore a valid source of data has not, to our knowledge, been systematically explored. We offer two detailed cross-linguistic case studies of Spanish and English verbs to provide an argument that figurative verb uses indeed are a reliable source of evidence for identifying event referential components of meaning: In each case study we find clear evidence for the preservation of these components across uses, indicating that these aspects of meaning both constrain and facilitate figurative uses of verbs.

This paper investigates the meaning adaptability of change of state (CoS) verbs. Itargues that both coercion and underspecification are necessary mechanisms in order to properlyaccount for the semantic adaptability observable for CoS verbs in combination with theircomplements. This type of meaning adaptability has received little formal attention to date,although some recent work has already led the way on this topic (Spalek, 2014; Lukassek andSpalek, 2016; Asher et al., 2017). Our paper is part of a cross-linguistic case study of Germaneinfrieren and Spanish congelar (‘freeze’). We model the meaning adaptability of this test casewithin Type Composition Logic (TCL) (Asher, 2011). We build on Asher’s coercion mechanismand introduce an additional mechanism for underspecification that exploits the fine-grained typesystem in TCL.Keywords: lexical semantics, change of state verbs, coercion, underspecification, Type CompositionLogic.

Among the words that describe initial or final parts of events, words describing finishing stand out in a number of ways: in a language like English, there is a transitive verb which is singularly flexible regarding the type of event retrievable from the context; in a language like German, there is no verb but there is a verbal particle; in either case, there is a requirement of telicity and there is a requirement of theme incrementality. The present paper documents these facts and offers an analysis of the verbal particle.

IntroducciónLa representación lexicográfica de la polisemia léxica procedente de los usos figurados ha sido tratada teóricamente por muchos lexicógrafos, como por ejemplo De Hoyos (1996), Porto Dapena (2002) o Battaner (2006, y ha sido plasmada y marcada de diversas maneras en distintos diccionarios, a veces explicitando el criterio y a veces más bien ocultando las bases teóricas sobre las que se elaboraba y marcaba. En los últimos años, sin embargo, han aumentado las discusiones acerca de las dificultades que sigue presentando el empleo de una marca de sentido figurado para las voces polisémicas. Dichas discusiones han puesto en entredicho la relevancia de este tipo de marcas, llevando finalmente a la supresión generalizada liderada por diccionarios de gran importancia como el Diccionario de la Real Academia Española (DRAE) en su edición del año 2001.Paralelamente ha crecido el interés por las dificultades que presenta el lenguaje figurado en el ámbito de la adquisición de lenguas extranjeras trayendo consigo que especialmente los diccionarios monolingües de aprendizaje se esforzaran cada vez más por recoger información acerca de metáforas, intentando así contribuir a la ampliación del vocabulario del estudiante extranjero, como se observa en el caso del Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learner. Dicho diccionario comenzó a incorporar en su edición del año 2002 los tal llamados Metaphor Boxes que informaban a sus usuarios de metáforas conceptuales frecuentes, hasta finalmente terminar añadiendo en el año 2007 una sección teórico-práctica de cuatro páginas a fin de dar cuenta de la importancia y de la frecuencia del proceso de creación de nuevo vocabulario basado en la derivación semántica figurada a partir del sentido recto de una voz.Generalmente se puede decir que la representación sincrónica de la polisemia se plasma en artículos lexicográficos de varias acepciones correspondientes a un solo lema. Dependiendo de la distancia semántica patente entre los distintos usos de la unidad léxica se distinguen más o menos acepciones entre las cuales hasta hace relativamente poco se solían resaltar las acepciones metafóricas con marcas como figurado, metafóricamente, por alusión, etc., que concienciaban al usuario del uso figurado de una acepción determinada. No obstante, como observaron Borràs y Torner (2006) este tipo de marcas ha desaparecido casi por completo en la última edición del Diccionario de la Real Academia Española quedando en apenas 295 indicaciones acerca de los usos figurados en comparación con las 17000 acepciones marcadas con fig. en la edición del año 1992. Con dicha supresión de la marca de transposición semántica el DRAE se ha hecho eco de las tendencias actuales que tachan el uso de estas marcas de inapropiado para diccionarios sincrónicos.
