Antiochus; after Panium, Sidon and other strongholds still had to be captured. Full control of the new territory was gained only in 198 (Livy 33.19.8). In other words, the Roman ambassadors o ¶ered Ptolemy V no help against Antiochus. Rather, they left him to his fate. E. has done a great service in introducing the theories of political science to ancient historians. His mastery of the μeld is impressive and he argues his case with conviction and enthusiasm. In some instances, however, the models he uses seem to mould his interpretation of the ancient sources. He is a μrst-rate ancient historian with a complete command of the sources and bibliography. It goes without saying that his treatment of Polybius-related topics such as symplokê and Tychê are done with a sure hand (pp. 79-83, 134-7, 221-24, etc.). Also hidden within his scholarly pages are gems such as the lines of Alcaeus of Messene concerning Philip V and Antiochus III (pp. 81-2, 297), and the curious story about the temporary transportation of the Great Mother of Pessinus to . This book is a very rich, but also a very challenging, read.
