We believe it is helpful in understanding hikikomori to first understand how the attachment system balances security with exploration and the anxiety associated with novelty and challenge. Finally, we examine implications of the model for intervention, treatment and future research.
Differences between Asian-heritage and European-heritage individuals have been found in both the prevalence and expression of social anxiety. Previous research suggests higher social anxiety among AH individuals, but both the methodology and the findings have been mixed and the effect sizes varied widely. The purpose of this meta-analytic study was to examine whether the AH/EH differences in social anxiety were robust across various moderators, and how these differences may be accounted by ethnic differences in self-construal and acculturative stress. The meta-analysis revealed a moderate mean effect size of d = 0.36, CI [0.27, 0.44]. Moderator analyses demonstrated that these effects were robust across moderators. Results of meta-regression analyses indicated that independent self-construal significantly contributed to social anxiety. Directions for future research include exploration of measurement issues, and a need to develop a theoretical model that includes factors that mediate the ethnic differences in independent self-construal and differences in social anxiety.
The Prodromal Questionnaire-Brief is a scale that is used to screen individuals for risk for the development of psychosis. It has promising psychometric properties in clinical and nonclinical populations, including undergraduates. However, the measurement invariance of the scale has not been examined in Asian, White, Hispanic, and Multiracial samples. A total of 2,767 undergraduates at two large public U.S. universities completed the Prodromal Questionnaire-Brief. The Total scores had configural and scalar invariance, while the Distress scores displayed configural, metric, and partial scalar invariance. Follow-up analyses revealed that three items were responsible for the lack of complete scalar invariance for the Distress scores. This suggests that the Total and Distress scores are measuring the same construct across groups and mean scores represent the same level of latent prodromal traits across groups. Mean comparisons for the Distress Scale across ethnicity should be interpreted with caution because it lacks complete scalar invariance. White and Hispanic participants had lower Total scores that Multiracial and Asian participants, and this pattern emerged for 13 items. For the distress items that were scalar invariant, the Asian group reported more distress than the White and Hispanic groups, while the Multiracial group reported more distress than the White group.
Abundant research conducted in Western contexts has shown that biological risk factors such as low resting heart rate (HR) might be related to childhood aggression. However, it was unclear (1) how resting HR, as well as other markers of cardiac functions such as resting vagal tone, may be related to subtypes of aggression such as reactive and proactive aggression, and (2) whether the HR-aggression relation can be replicated in non-Western contexts. Therefore, this study examined the concurrent and prospective relations between resting HR, vagal tone, and Chinese children's reactive and proactive aggression. Participants were 183 children (M age=7.64 years, 91 girls) recruited from an elementary school in Zhenjiang, PRC. Children's resting HR and vagal tone were assessed in the second grade (T1). Teachers rated children's reactive and proactive aggression in the second (T1) and fourth grade (T2). Results showed that lower resting HR at T1 was associated with higher reactive and proactive aggression at T1 and T2, and higher vagal tone was associated with lower HR, which in turn was related to higher reactive and proactive aggression at T1 and T2. Lower vagal tone was directly related to higher reactive but not proactive aggression at T1 and T2, whereas lower HR was related to higher reactive aggression at T2 for children with low or moderate vagal tone but was not for children with high vagal tone. These psychophysiological findings from a non-Western context add additional support for both similarities and differences between reactive and proactive aggression in childhood.
The Wisconsin Schizotypy Scales, including their brief versions, are among the most commonly used self-report measures of schizotypy. Although they have been used extensively in many ethnic groups, few studies have examined their differential item functioning (DIF) across groups. The current study included 1,056 Asian, 408 White, 476 Multiethnic, and 372 Hispanic undergraduates. Unidimensional models of the brief Magical Ideation Scale and Perceptual Aberration Scales fit the data well. For both scales, global tests of measurement invariance provided mixed evidence, but few of the items displayed DIF across ethnicities or between sexes within a multiple indicator multiple causes model. For the full versions of the scales and the brief Revised Social Anhedonia Scale, multiple indicator multiple causes models within an exploratory structural equation modeling framework found that few of the items had DIF. These findings suggest that some of the items may have different psychometric properties across groups, but most items do not.
