We present a new open-source torque-controlled legged robot system, with a low cost and low complexity actuator module at its core. It consists of a low-weight high torque brushless DC motor and a low gear ratio transmission suitable for impedance and force control. We also present a novel foot contact sensor suitable for legged locomotion with hard impacts. A 2.2 kg quadruped robot with a large range of motion is assembled from 8 identical actuator modules and 4 lower legs with foot contact sensors. To the best of our knowledge, it is the most lightest force-controlled quadruped robot. We leverage standard plastic 3D printing and off-theshelf parts, resulting in light-weight and inexpensive robots, allowing for rapid distribution and duplication within the research community. In order to quantify the capabilities of our design, we systematically measure the achieved impedance at the foot in static and dynamic scenarios. We measured up to 10.8 dimensionless leg stiffness without active damping, which is comparable to the leg stiffness of a running human. Finally, in order to demonstrate the capabilities of our quadruped robot, we propose a novel controller which combines feedforward contact forces computed from a kino-dynamic optimizer with impedance control of the robot center of mass and base orientation. The controller is capable of regulating complex motions which are robust to environmental uncertainty. *

Creating natural-looking running gaits for humanoid robots is a complex task due to the underactuated degree of freedom in the trunk, which makes the motion planning and control difficult. The research on trunk movements in human locomotion is insufficient, and no formalism is known to transfer human motion patterns onto robots. Related work mostly focuses on the lower extremities, and simplifies the problem by stabilizing the trunk at a fixed angle. In contrast, humans display significant trunk motions that follow the natural dynamics of the gait. In this work, we use a springloaded inverted pendulum model with a trunk (TSLIP) together with a virtual point (VP) target to create trunk oscillations and investigate the impact of these movements. We analyze how the VP location and forward speed determine the direction and magnitude of the trunk oscillations. We show that positioning the VP below the center of mass (CoM) can explain the forward trunk pitching observed in human running. The VP below the CoM leads to a synergistic work between the hip and leg, reducing the leg loading. However, it comes at the cost of increased peak hip torque. Our results provide insights for leveraging the trunk motion to redistribute joint loads and potentially improve the energy efficiency in humanoid robots.

Muscle models and animal observations suggest that physical damping is beneficial for stabilization. Still, only a few implementations of physical damping exist in compliant robotic legged locomotion. It remains unclear how physical damping can be exploited for locomotion tasks, while its advantages as sensor-free, adaptive force-and negative work-producing actuators are promising. In a simplified numerical leg model, we studied the energy dissipation from viscous and Coulomb damping during vertical drops with ground-level perturbations. A parallel spring-damper is engaged between touchdown and mid-stance, and its damper auto-decouples from mid-stance to takeoff. Our simulations indicate that an adjustable and viscous damper is desired. In hardware we explored effective viscous damping and adjustability, and quantified the dissipated energy. We tested two mechanical, leg-mounted damping mechanisms: a commercial hydraulic damper, and a custom-made pneumatic damper. The pneumatic damper exploits a rolling diaphragm with an adjustable orifice, minimizing Coulomb damping effects while permitting adjustable resistance. Experimental results show that the leg-mounted, hydraulic damper exhibits the most effective viscous damping. Adjusting the orifice setting did not result in substantial changes of dissipated energy per drop, unlike adjusting the damping parameters in the numerical model. Consequently, we also emphasize the importance of characterizing physical dampers during real legged impacts to evaluate their effectiveness for compliant legged locomotion.

We investigate the role of lower leg muscle-tendon structures in providing serial elastic behavior to the hip actuator. We present a leg design with physical elastic elements in leg angle and virtual leg axis direction, and its impact onto energy efficient legged locomotion. By testing and comparing two robotic lower leg spring configurations, we can provide potential explanations of the functionality of similar animal leg morphologies with lower leg muscle-tendon network structures. We investigate the effects of leg angle compliance during locomotion. In a proof of concept, we show that a leg with a gastrocnemius inspired elasticity possesses elastic components that deflect in leg angle directions. The leg design with elastic elements in leg angle direction can store hip actuator energy in the series elastic element. We then show the leg's advantages in mechanical design in a vertical drop experiment. In the drop experiments the biarticular leg requires 46% less power. During drop loading, the leg adapts its posture and stores the energy in its springs. The increased energy storing capacity in leg angle direction reduces energy requirements and cost of transport by 31% during dynamic hopping to a cost of transport of 1.2 at 0.9 kg body weight. The biarticular robot leg design has major advantages, especially compared to more traditional robot designs. Despite its high degree of under-actuation, it is easy to converge into and maintain dynamic hopping locomotion. The presented control is based on a simple-to-implement, feed-forward pattern generator. The biarticular legs lightweight design can be rapidly assembled and is largely made from elements created by rapid prototyping. At the same time it is robust, and passively withstands drops from 200% body height. The biarticular leg shows, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the lowest achieved relative cost of transport documented for all dynamically hopping and running robots of 64% of a comparable natural runner's COT.
