Remote estimation of Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence emitted by terrestrial vegetation can provide an unparalleled opportunity to track spatiotemporal variations of photosynthetic efficiency. Here we provide the first direct experimental evidence that the two peaks of the chlorophyll fluorescence spectrum can be accurately mapped from high-resolution radiance spectra and that the signal is linked to variations in actual photosynthetic efficiency. Red and far red fluorescence measured using a novel airborne imaging spectrometer over a grass carpet treated with an herbicide known to inhibit photosynthesis was significantly higher than the corresponding signal from an equivalent untreated grass carpet. The reflectance signal of the two grass carpets was indistinguishable, confirming that the fast dynamic changes in fluorescence emission were related to variations in the functional status of actual photosynthesis induced by herbicide application. Our results from a controlled experiment at the local scale illustrate the potential for the global mapping of terrestrial photosynthesis through space-borne measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence.

Summary1. Cloud cover affects carbon exchange between biota and the atmosphere. Recent studies have demonstrated that an increase in the diffuse radiation fraction enhances the photosynthetic efficiency of canopies. Although the exact mechanism behind this effect is not clear, a more even distribution of light among leaves across the vertical profile of the canopy is considered to be the most important cause of this difference. 2. To test this hypothesis, the net ecosystem production (NEP) of a Norway spruce forest (30-year-old) was measured under cloudy and sunny skies by the eddy covariance method. In parallel, measurements of the diurnal courses of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were made in the upper sun (5th whorl; 1-year-old needles), middle (8th and 10th whorl; 1-and 2-year-old needles) and lower shade (15th whorl; >2-year-old needles) shoots. 3. The higher diffuse radiation fraction during cloudy days resulted in significantly higher ecosystem carbon uptake than at corresponding incident photosynthetic photon flux density on sunny days. Our shoot-level data show that shoots from deep within the canopy contribute substantially to the overall carbon balance during cloudy days. But, although shade-adapted shoots had a markedly positive carbon balance over a 24-h period on cloudy days, their performance was impaired on sunny days contributing only a marginal or even negative carbon balance from the middle and shaded parts of the canopy. The uppermost sun shoots contributed 78% of the total carbon assimilated during a sunny day, but only 43% during a cloudy day. 4. In addition, afternoon depression of canopy NEP and CO 2 assimilation rates of the uppermost shoots (5th and 8th whorl) occurred in response to irradiance on sunny days, characterized by significant decreases in CO 2 uptake and apparent quantum yield; however, this depression did not occur under cloudy conditions. Stomatal and non-stomatal regulations of carbon assimilation in the afternoon are discussed.

Here, we provide a random-effects meta-analysis of studies using both passively (sun-induced) and actively (e.g. laserinduced) measured steady-state F for detecting stress reactions in terrestrial vegetation. Specifically, we review behaviour of F in red and far-red wavelengths, and also the red to far-red F ratio, for plants physiologically stressed by water deficit, temperature extremes, and nitrogen insufficiency. Results suggest that water stress is, in general, associated with a decline in red and far-red F signal intensity measured at both leaf and canopy levels, whereas the red to far-red F ratio displays an inconsistent behaviour. Chilling, for which only studies with active measurements at the leaf level are available, significantly increased red and far-red F, whereas heat stress produced a less convincing decrease in both F emissions, notably in canopies measured passively. The clearest indicator of temperature stress was the F ratio, which declined significantly and consistently. The F ratio was also the strongest indicator of nitrogen deficiency, revealing a nearly uniformly increasing pattern driven by predominantly declining far-red F. Although significant knowledge gaps were encountered for certain scales and F measurement techniques, the analyses indicate that future airborne or space-borne acquisitions of both red and far-red F signals would be beneficial for timely detection of plant stress events. Interactions between climate change and UV penetration in the biosphere are resulting in the exposure of plants to new combinations of UV radiation and drought. In theory, the impacts of combinations of UV and drought may be additive, synergistic or antagonistic. Lack of understanding of the impacts of combined treatments creates substantial uncertainties that hamper predictions of future ecological change. Here, we compiled information from 52 publications and analysed the relative impacts of UV and/or drought. Both UV and drought have substantial negative effects on biomass accumulation, plant height, photosynthesis, leaf area and stomatal conductance and transpiration, while increasing stress‐associated symptoms such as MDA accumulation and reactive‐oxygen‐species content. Contents of proline, flavonoids, antioxidants and anthocyanins, associated with plant acclimation, are upregulated both under enhanced UV and drought. In plants exposed to both UV and drought, increases in plant defense responses are less‐than‐additive, and so are the damage and growth retardation. Less‐than‐additive effects were observed across field, glasshouse and growth‐chamber studies, indicating similar physiological response mechanisms. Induction of a degree of cross‐resistance seems the most likely interpretation of the observed less‐than‐additive responses. The data show that in future climates, the impacts of increases in drought exposure may be lessened by naturally high UV regimes.
