Caatinga Species as an Alternative to the Development of New Phytochemicals ABSTRACTMuch of the Brazilian semiarid region is in advanced stage of degradation, and few studies direct their development in line with this reality. In this work, we carried out an ethnobotanical survey comprising 256 families. The survey aimed to identify the species used in traditional medicine by the population of the municipality of Monteiro, Paraiba state. A floristic inventory of all species was conducted in a forest fragment with 30 years of conservation in order to identify the availability of the species that are most used by the local population. Thirty-eight species were identified in the ethnobotanical survey and 37 in the forest fragment; of these, 14 were common to both groups. Myracrodruon urundeuva, Sideroxylon obtusifolium, Amburana cearensis Triplaris gardneriana, Anadenanthera colubrina, Hymenaea courbaril, and Bauhinia cheilantha were identified as the most potential species for research on phytochemicals.
O diâmetro caulinar do táxon apresentou crescimento constante. Structure of natural regeneration in Anadenanthera colubrina altitude swamp fragment in Bananeiras, PB, BrazilThe habitats destruction linked to fragmentation causes serious consequences for vegetation in general, especially considering the Northeast Atlantic Forest. The Northeastern Swamps of Altitudes are areas with microclimates dissociating from extensions where they are inserted. Knowledge of the natural regeneration potential is the key to understanding the dynamics of vegetation. The study aimed to evaluate the recruitment and mortality of Anadenanthera colubrina regenerating occurring in Open Rain Forest fragments. In a population of A. colubrina, ten plots with 10 m x 10 m were established, near matrices plants. All specimens with 1 m height or lower were numbered and monitored for 9 months. The stem diameter of the taxon showed continuous growth. The monthly average increment in diameter was at first 1.8 mm and at the end 2.3 mm, and the average stem increment in height was 20 cm at the first month and 25.9 cm at the last month evaluate. The mortality rate reached 50%. Environmental and anthropogenic factors and seed predation contribute to mortality of regenerating individuals.Index terms: Abiotic factors; Recruitment; Mortality
Palavras-chave: indicadores ambientais; qualidade do solo; manejo; agroecossistemas. Qualitative indicators of the edaphic environment and ecosystem services in different land occupation systems ABSTRACT: The concept of sustainability has led agricultural research to a growing search for alternative and sustainable models for agriculture, with the forms of land use and management being the determining starting point for understanding the dynamics of the edaphic environment and environmental services of agroecosystems. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the quality of the edaphic environment and ecosystem services in different land occupation systems, through qualitative environmental indicators. Sustainable indicators of participatory diagnosis were selected to assess four land occupation systems: pasture, agricultural mandala, agroforestry system and native forest. The data set of the soil indicators was analyzed using a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The agroforestry system has similarities in the quality of the edaphic environment and ecosystem services when compared to the native forest area. It is recommended that soil conservation management practices be adopted in systems with greater anthropic intervention, such as pasture and agricultural mandala. Keywords: environmental indicators; soil quality; management; agroecosystems.
