The study reviewed literature on the theories of poverty. The theories reviewed included theory of individual deficiencies, theory of cultural beliefs, theory of economic, political and social distortions, theory of geographical disparities, and theory of cumulative and cyclical dependencies. The theories were analysed, criticised and measures that will bring the poor out of poverty were recommended. Some of the recommended solutions included: encouraging the poor to embrace self-help strategies, replacing the culture with one that encourages hard work and investment, changing the system for the better, improving infrastructure and local industries competitiveness, and developing comprehensive programmes that will help the poor to be selfsufficient.
The main goal of the study was to examine or investigate the impact of strategic management practices on the growth of SMEs in Ghana. Purposive sampling technique was employed to sample 190 SMEs in Accra, though 150 SMEs responded to the questionnaire. With the help of SPSS version 22, Multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the impact of strategic management practices on the performance and hence growth of SMEs in Ghana. The study revealed a significant positive relationship between strategy formulation and growth of SMEs in Ghana. The study also found a significant positive relationship between strategy implementation and the growth of SMEs in Ghana, but found a negative relationship between strategy evaluation and growth of SMEs in Ghana. However, overall, the study found a positive relationship between effective and efficient application of strategic management practices and the growth of SMEs in Ghana. As a contribution to policy and practice, the study recommended among others that policy makers, managers and owners of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) should employ strategic management experts especially in the field of strategy evaluation to enhance the quality of their strategy evaluation process so as to positively influence the performance and growth of SMEs.
Among the main objectives of microfinance intervention is to help women entrepreneurs grow their businesses andhence enhance their socio-economic well-being. The study therefore was conducted to assess the effect of microfinance on socio-economic well-being of women (or women empowerment) SPSS was used to run regression to examine the correlation between microfinance and profit and hence economic well-being of the women entrepreneurs. It was found that microfinance indeed has a direct correlation with Profit and hence socio-economic well-being of women (women empowerment). Stated differently it was revealed that Microfinance has positively impacted on the women's Profit, businesses and hence their socio-economic-wellbeing. However, there was a reasonable percentage of respondents who indicatedthat microfinance has rather made them worse off. Contribution/ OriginalityThe study contributes to existing literature in the area of microfinance and women empowerment.
