Héritière d'une longue tradition lettrée, la prose libre ou sanwen (terme souvent rendu par « essai » ou par « prose littéraire ») est devenue à l'époque moderne un des quatre grands genres de la littérature chinoise à côté de la poésie, du roman et du théâtre. Pratiquée de tous temps par une multitude d'écrivains, elle constitue un domaine très vaste et d'une grande complexité, et demeure un genre peu traduit et peu étudié à l'étranger. Le présent ouvrage se présente comme une introduction à quelques-unes des problématiques du sanwen moderne. À travers une suite d'études de cas qui s'étendent, chronologiquement, de Lu Xun à Yan Lianke et à Mu Xin, en passant par Deng Tuo, Ba Jin ou Wang Xiaobo, il traite de différents types de prose littéraire, parmi lesquels l'essai polémique ou zawen, et aborde différentes questions théoriques : les difficultés terminologiques et définitoires, les effets produits par le texte selon son mode de publication, le rôle de l'essai comme arme politique et comme témoignage, la frontière entre littérature fictionnelle et non fictionnelle.
ANGEL PINO (DIR.)Angel Pino, sinologue, professeur des universités, enseigne au Département d'études chinoises de l'université Bordeaux Montaigne. Il est responsable du Centre d'études et de recherches sur l'Extrême-Orient (Plurielles, UR 24142) de ce même établissement. Spécialiste de Ba Jin, il a consacré à l'écrivain de nombreuses études et a traduit Admirateur d'Orwell, auquel il se réfère dans son roman Le Monde futur, Wang Xiaobo est aussi l'auteur de nombreux écrits que l'on classe d'ordinaire parmi les zawen et dont la plupart ont paru en volumes après la mort de l'auteur disparu prématurément. Pour Mei Mercier, ces essais dénotent un double héritage spirituel, celui de Lu Xun pour l'engagement social et celui de Zhou Zuoren pour l'attachement à l'expression individuelle (« le plaisir de penser », dans le langage de Wang Xiaobo). Ils sont aussi en phase avec la mentalité des intellectuels libéraux des années 1990. À travers une analyse stylistique de deux des textes les plus célèbres de Wang Xiaobo, Mei Mercier montre comment s'y conjuguent l'utilisation habile d'anecdotes réelles ou fictives, l'argumentation logique et l'humour. Une recette classique du zawen, mais à laquelle l'esprit subversif de Wang Xiaobo confère un éclat particulier.De son vivant, Wang Xiaobo était plus connu comme essayiste que comme romancier, ce qu'il déplorait, l'art romanesque étant, ainsi que nous le rappelle Mei Mercier, sa véritable passion. À l'inverse, si Yan Lianke (né en 1958) doit sa notoriété à ses romans, il n'en a pas moins succombé, lui aussi, à l'attrait de l'essai, au point d'en nourrir pas moins de quatorze recueils.
