Science has a critical role to play in guiding more sustainable development trajectories. Here, we present the Sustainable Amazon Network ( Rede Amazônia Sustentável , RAS): a multidisciplinary research initiative involving more than 30 partner organizations working to assess both social and ecological dimensions of land-use sustainability in eastern Brazilian Amazonia. The research approach adopted by RAS offers three advantages for addressing land-use sustainability problems: (i) the collection of synchronized and co-located ecological and socioeconomic data across broad gradients of past and present human use; (ii) a nested sampling design to aid comparison of ecological and socioeconomic conditions associated with different land uses across local, landscape and regional scales; and (iii) a strong engagement with a wide variety of actors and non-research institutions. Here, we elaborate on these key features, and identify the ways in which RAS can help in highlighting those problems in most urgent need of attention, and in guiding improvements in land-use sustainability in Amazonia and elsewhere in the tropics. We also discuss some of the practical lessons, limitations and realities faced during the development of the RAS initiative so far.
PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Inovações do Concreto Projetado, Obras subterrâneas, Tunelamento 4.0.ABSTRACT: Shotcrete is a centuries-old technique widely used in underground construction. Despite this, it has been changed due to the emergence of innovative ideas and technological advances that have occurred in the last years. Because of this process, this paper aims to group some of the innovations that have been presented lately. Thus, a 3D simulator for nozzleman training was shown, as well machines equipped with a scanner that optimize the application of shotcrete; this indicates that the sector trend is process automation, a fact that was promoted by Tunneling 4.0. New cementitious composites were aborted such as the self-healing concrete that solves cracking problems. It was also treated about equipment that solves logistics problems, about the use of geosynthetic as reinforcement and the creation of new machine for technological control of concrete applied in excavations subject to large displacements (Bulking). Through these innovations it is possible to see although the large number of years that shotcrete was used in excavations, there are many things about this technique to discover, improve and implement, all of this corroborates for the formation of a more robust underground works engineering.
