The implementation of external and internal politics of the state cannot be considered without taking into account socially psychological challenges, which constantly are taking place in the social reality of all its residents. A transformation of cognitive, attitude-related, motivational components of psychological space of every person living in the country, in accordance with the cardinal changes of geographical and political determinants, has not been studied well enough. This fact does not allow, from the scientific point of view, reforming the educational, political and emigrational strategies of the state. The individual concepts often derive from the social representations prevailed in the society. Very often it is the only way to receive the information on the required subject. Social representations based on information from mass media, knowledge received from the other people's experience, including rumours, gossips, beliefs, etc., provide a good ground for the individual concept of the phenomena. Joining the European Union in May 2004 caused an important transformation of social reality and 'life-space' of residents of the Baltic States through their reflection of life in the new European Community. It caused a cardinal reconstruction of social representations of a new environment of its residents. The increased mobility of population of the Baltic States, the war in Ukraine, acts of terrorism in some European countries, recently have taken place in this part of the world. All these events have made a big impact on social representations about EU countries. The study on social representations of personal security of EU states among Latvian residents is a part of research-project on Social Representations about EU countries among Latvian residents. The objective of the given research is to shape the content and follow the transformation of social representations of European Union countries in modern Latvian society. One hundred Latvian residents 18-65 years old (Mean = 33.82; SD = 10.70) have participated in the study held in 2015 in addition to 2329 Latvian residents who participated in the study in 2005. The results received in both studies are compared are discussed.
The results of the Latvian students in the mathematics exam are below expectations from year to year at an average score of 37 % over past three years being the worst result among all centralized exams (CE) in Latvia. Despite these worrying statistics, only three researches were published in the last 10 years by responsible institutions, mostly covering bad news. This is why the aim of this article is to encourage scientific discussion on undisputed unsatisfactory results in math, to determine factors with the greatest influence on the results of a secondary school math exam and to discuss potential improvements in preparing for the exam. The study was held in Marupe Secondary School in suburb of Riga, Latvia. A huge amount of data was collected about 53 respondents over their three years of studying in high school classes and after passing the exam. All obtained data were analyzed in search of correlation between exam score and all kinds of factors. Factors with the highest impact turned out to be results in physics, Latvian and biology, problem solving and modelling skills, proactively asking for help if a student did not understand the concept. It is also useful to learn factors that have a negative correlation with exam results, for example, regular homework assignment led to significantly lower result in the exam. During this research it proved to be wrong to consider that solving past exams is a factor with positive interdependence with exam score, because no correlation was found. It is significant to discuss these and all kind of other data-based findings on why student results in mathematics in Latvia are this low to prevent relying on stereotypes reproduced for years and to keep on searching for the best approaches of teaching and learning mathematics.

This a pilot study where the study method “Autoidentification and Identification Method According to Oral Portrayals of Character”. Contemporary psychological studies show that a person’s behaviour in social context is not only simple consequences of the objective conditions having effect on him or her, it significantly depends on subjective perception and interpretation of the aggregate of external events, i.e., determination of situation carried out by an individual. Autoidentification method according to oral portrayals of character (Эйдемиллер, 1973) was used for diagnosing the personality and image of “I” accentuation types. The pilot study involved two groups of adolescents; one group included adolescents with deviant behaviour (n=60, 39 boys, 21 girl) but the second group included adolescents without actual behaviour disorders (n= 60, 35 boys, 25 girls). The study allowed determination of differences between the results presented by both groups with constituting grounds for performing further empiric study with a larger selection of study in the future.

The authors provides reasons for the significance of assessment of epistemic authority of university professors, explicates the concept of epistemic authority and the issues related to research into this concept. In English, epistemic or epistemological means “of, relating to, or involving knowledge; cognitive”. An epistemic authority is a source of information who has a determining role in the process knowledge formation (Kruglanski, 1989). Authors analysed conceptual approaches to problems related to assessment of epistemic authority of university professors and to expand on the explanations to the problems in view of the results of the research study on student-perceived epistemic authority of university professors. The article includes the results of students (N=152) and graduates (N=210) of institutions of higher education located in Riga (Latvia).

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
