RESUMOO torneamento de acabamento é caracterizado por ser uma operação de finalização da peça, em função do raio de ponta da ferramenta ser considerado um dos fatores de maior influência sobre a rugosidade superficial de peças que passaram pelo processo de torneamento de acabamento, aliado ao fato de pesquisas publicadas relatarem discrepâncias entre os cálculos teóricos e os métodos experimentais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a interferência do raio de ponta da ferramenta em termos do parâmetro Rz medido, em relação ao esperado teoricamente, e analisar através de imagens tridimensionais e por vistas laterais, as marcas superficiais deixadas pela ferramenta de corte em cada uma das peças torneadas. A pesquisa permitiu identificar que ao aumentar o raio de ponta da ferramenta de 0,4 mm para 0,8 mm ocorreu uma diminuição da rugosidade superficial, em termos do parâmetro Rz, quando o material torneado foi o alumínio, concordando com a equação teórica. No entanto, quando o material torneado foi o aço, o inverso ocorreu. Esse fato foi justificado em função da menor usinabilidade do aço e pelos outros parâmetros envolvidos no processo os quais não foram levados em consideração, tais como velocidade de corte, desgaste da ferramenta, atrito e forças de corte. RESUMOO torneamento é uma operação de usinagem comumente usada na indústria, produzindo uma variedade de componentes, atendendo aos requisitos de alta precisão e confiabilidade. Sendo um processo que merece ser cuidadosamente estudado em função dos desafios que apresenta e das possibilidades de otimização ainda a serem descobertas. A indústria da usinagem vem constantemente se esforçando para aumentar a qualidade das peças usinadas, com esse objetivo a rugosidade superficial tem destaque por desempenhar um papel importante em muitas áreas e ser um fator essencial na evolução da precisão dimensional dos componentes de usinagem. Logo, a seleção dos parâmetros de usinagem mais adequados para a obtenção de uma rugosidade superficial apropriada para determinada função é um ponto que precisa ser mais estudado. Assim, o presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a influência do avanço na rugosidade superficial do aço 1020 submetido ao processo de torneamento externo. Para isso foram utilizados quatro valores de avanço (0,07; 0,12; 0,17 e 0,22 mm/rot) enquanto os demais parâmetros de corte foram mantidos constantes. Através da técnica de Perfilometria óptica, os valores do parâmetro de rugosidade média (Ra) foram comparados entre si e com os valores esperados pela literatura. As imagens em 3D possibilitaram a visualização da superfície da peça após ter sido torneada. Sendo possível concluir que realizar estimativas do valor de rugosidade em função de modelos teóricos pode levar a uma avaliação errônea dos valores previstos mínimos de rugosidade para componentes usinados, uma vez que vários fatores inerentes ao processo são desconsiderados.
