Catorce años de imágenes infrarroja de satélite (1983-1996) son usadas para examinar la variabilidad de la temperatura superficial del mar (TSM) del Golfo de California. El estudio de la TSM se enfocó a las escalas semianual, anual e interanual y al promedio. En promedio, la TSM disminuye de la boca hacia la cabeza y su variabilidad aumenta. La escala anual es la responsable de la mayor parte de la variabilidad de la TSM, la cual oscila en fase con pequeñas variaciones de norte a sur. Espacialmente se encuentra en la región norte la formación de núcleos cálidos en invierno, asociados con giros anticiclónicos y núcleos fríos en verano, asociados con giros ciclónicos. La transición de primavera muestra un giro ciclónico ubicado más sobre el lado continental y la de otoño muestra un giro anticiclónico no muy bien definido. La TSM en la región de las islas es siempre menor que el resto del golfo. La variabilidad transversal de la estructura de TSM en la región central y sur se asocia con surgencias. La estructura espacial de la amplitud semianual es tal que aumenta hacia la cabeza al igual que la escala anual. La amplitud en la cabeza es el doble que en la boca y presenta gradientes menores. En la escala interanual, los eventos de 1988-1989 y 1992-1993 se distinguen por llegar hasta la región norte. En ambos eventos, las anomalías aparecen simultáneamente en la región de la boca e islas y a medida que evolucionan se intensifican más en la región de las islas. Este comportamiento no había sido descrito anteriormente. Los eventos de 1985, 1987 y 1990 presentan una evolución "normal", es decir, una invasión progresiva de aguas cálidas de la región sur hacia dentro del golfo.
Se utiliza un modelo numérico barotrópico tridimensional para estudiar la circulación del Golfo de México. Se obtienen las corrientes forzadas por la marea, el viento y la Corriente de Yucatán, y se estudia la acción individual y el conjunto de estos forzamientos. Se reproduce satisfactoriamente la circulación y el campo de elevación debidos a la marea. Al forzar el modelo con viento se obtuvo una circulación anticiclónica en la región occidental del Golfo de México, circulación que ha sido asociada con el viento y los giros anticiclónicos provenientes de la región oriental del Golfo de México en otros estudios. Los resultados de este trabajo sugieren que el desprendimiento de remolinos es un proceso principalmente baroclínico. La contribución del flrrjo barotrópico de la Corriente de Yucatán a la circulación del Golfo de México se restringe a la región oriental de esta cuenca.
Introducción El objetivo de este estudio es documentar la evolución del evento Santa Ana ocurrido a mediados de febrero de 2002, con énfasis en la determinación de su área de influencia en el océano, frente a California y la Península de Baja California (fig. 1). Datos de estratificación y corriente media de un modelo cuasigeostrófico de ocho capas de la Corriente de California son usados para resolver el problema de estabilidad lineal asociado. Se obtiene, al resolver un problema de autovalores complejos la frecuencia, rapidez de fase, velocidad de grupo, razón de crecimiento y estructura vertical. Se corren siete experimentos para estudiar la influencia de las diferentes condiciones de frontera (fondo plano o inclinado), dirección media de la corriente, amplitud, latitud y mecanismos de fricción en las características de las ondas de Rossby. Usando valores de la frecuencia de flotabilidad características del Pacífico Nororiental encontramos que la resolución vertical es crucial para determinar los efectos de la topografía y fricción de fondo en la estabilidad del flujo básico. La estructura vertical del flujo medio tiene un efecto importante en la escala de decaimiento exponencial. Esta escala de decaimiento de las diferentes áreas de la región de la Corriente de California varía entre 144 y 374 días para las ondas más inestables. La estructura vertical de nuestra solución de onda (amplitud y fase) es afectada perceptiblemente por la disipación usada en el modelo. Las características del primer modo baroclínico de la onda estable son cualitativamente y cuantitativamente similares a las obtenidas por Kang et al. (1982) usando datos hidrográficos de la Corriente de California. La inclusión de topografía de fondo lleva a una moderada redistribución de frecuencias en el espacio de número de onda y a más altas velocidades de grupo.
Se estudia la propagación de señales de baja frecuencia en ocho años de datos (1982-1989) de Temperatura Superficial del Mar (TSM) en el noreste del Océano Pacífico. El análisis de las observaciones muestra que la variabilidad interanual de la TSM está asociada con la presencia de El Niño. Este se manifiesta como un frente paralelo a la costa así como una intrusión de agua más caliente que el promedio proveniente del océano interior. La primera eigenfunción (61%) está asociada con la presencia de El Niño en la costa en su fase madura y con su decaimiento en forma de señal que se propaga hacia el oeste en bajas latitudes. La segunda eigenfunción (29%) está asociada con la intrusión proveniente del océano interior, posiblemente inducida por advección de gran escala provocada por una intensificación de los vientos en el Pacífico central. Esta señal está desfasada en el tiempo aproximadamente año y medio con respecto al frente costero. La rapidez de propagación hacia el oeste de la señal detectada inicialmente en la costa, se estimó de 3.4 a 1.7 km/día en latitudes menores de 25°N. La posición de la fase teórica de una onda de Rossby se ajusta a los desplazamientos de la señal costera observada, identificando el posible mecanismo de esta propagación en la TSM.
