El debate sobre si la traducción teatral pertenece a la traducción literaria ha evolucionado de la misma forma que el propio concepto de traducción teatral. Así pues, frente a posturas más «tradicionales» que siguen considerando a la teatral como parte de la traducción literaria por su posibilidad de lectura surgen otras voces que la acercan más a la traducción audiovisual por el carácter más «práctico» del texto. Por ende, este artículo, que busca ser una revisión teórica de trabajos previos, intenta dar a conocer ambas posturas y dejar al lector su propia consideración ante un tema más intrincado de lo que pudiera parecer aparentemente.
A pesar de que la traducción teatral tiene una larga tradición, su estudio es algo relativamente novedoso dentro de los Estudios de Traducción. No en vano, Santoyo calificó la situación en 1995 de «páramo». Hoy, cerca de 20 años después, las cosas han mejorado bastante, pero es cierto que sigue siendo una de las disciplinas menos estudiadas. En este artículo, estudiaremos las diferencias del texto teatral con respecto a otros tipos de textos literarios y sentaremos las bases de un nuevo modelo traductológico de análisis basado en la práctica y, más concretamente, en la traducción y posterior montaje de dos obras de teatro del dramaturgo portugués José Maria Vieira Mendes.
