Os impactos ambientais causados pelo intenso uso de combustíveis fósseis impulsionam a realização de vários estudos nas últimas décadas voltados a culturas energéticas. Atualmente, o maior produtor mundial de etanol é os Estados Unidos que utiliza, para este fim, a cultura do milho (Zea mays). O Brasil se apresenta como o segundo maior produtor de culturas energéticas, fazendo uso, principalmente, da cultura da cana-de-açúcar. Entretanto, a cultura da batata-doce tem atraído bastante atenção do setor energético, devido ao alto teor de amido presente em sua composição. No Estado do Tocantins, há trabalhos referentes ao melhoramento genético da batata-doce visando a produção de etanol, indicando o seu enorme potencial para ser utilizada na cadeia produtiva de biocombustíveis. O etanol produzido por culturas agroenergéticas pode, futuramente, substituir o combustível fóssil, pois existem muitas culturas com potencial para serem empregadas com essa finalidade. Contudo, ainda é necessária uma maior consolidação por meio de pesquisas para a inserção dessas culturas na cadeia produtiva do etanol. Assim, nesta revisão bibliográfica, são abordadas as principais culturas empregadas para a produção de biocombustível, como a batata-doce.
