DURING the process of preparing his remarkable Edizione Nazionale of Petrarch's Rerum familiarium libri XXIV, 1 Vittorio Rossi perceived that artistic principles had indubitably been observed by Petrarch in developing not only his Familiares but his other epistolary collections as well. Speaking of three unedited letters that he had discovered, he expressed the following opinion in an article appearing in 1931: 2 Sono tra le molte che il Petrarca dimentico o voile dimenticare, quando compilo le sue grandi raccolte epistolari: dimenticd, perche d'argomento tenuto e senza durevole importanza: voile dimenticare, perche estranee o non adattabili a quella figurazione di se che gli balenava alia fantasia durante il lavoro di revisione, di modificazione, di ordinamento delle sue epistole. Fu detto che il Petrarca abbia cosi voluto fare toiletta per la posterita. Non credo sia vero; vero e che le grandi raccolte delle Familiari, delle Senili, delle Sine nomine e delle Metriche sono opere d'arte unitarie, nelle quali il Petrarca voile comporre in una coerente rappresentazione quella sua propria individuality che frammentata e varia esprimevano le lettere dirette a mille corrispondenti sparsi per le terre d'ltalia e d'Europa, le nugae, come egli diceva senz'ombra d'intenzione spregiativa, scritte nel corso di quella sua vita, cosi scarsa di grandi avvenimenti esterni, come piena d'interiori, forse non mai placate, battaglie.In an article appearing one year later, however, Rossi modified this view considerably. 3 After having once again shown in a very general manner that one of Petrarch's primary concerns had been to "fare delle sue raccolte epistolari, unitarie opere d'arte," he asks the question, "Nel fatto lo sono?" His answer is: Se arte e sintesi rappresentative, opera d'arte unitaria mirabilmente riuscita e il Canzoniere, dove l'anima del Petrarca cristiano, uomo nuovo, erudito, e la storia profonda di quell'anima balzano nell'essenza spirituale che quasi sempre pervade, facendone cosa non mai stata, reminiscenze, spunti ripresi, ovvie situazioni, immagini tradizionali. Ma le raccolte epistolari, no. Ivi i singoli pezzi, ancorche disposti secondo pretesi concetti d'arte a formare certo organismo costruttivo . . . , non sono stretti insieme a unita, ne dentro a ciascun pezzo, gli elementi espressivi del cristiano, dell'uomo nuovo, dell'erudito superati e annullati nel fuoco d'una viva temperie spirituale. Sono poche le epistole che fra le quasi cinque centinaia di Familiares e di Seniles rappresentatno una e coerente, di la da ogni sgretolio di citazioni, di reminiscenze, di ragionate strutture, l'anima singolarissima di Francesco Petrarca.
