It has long been recognised that Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients present an irreversible decline of cognitive functions as consequence of cell deterioration in the forebrain cholinergic projection system (FCPS), particularly, in a structure called nucleus basalis of Meynert (nbM). The reduction of the number of cholinergic cells in the FCPS disrupts not just its functions and direct connexions but also the modulation of other systems causing interference in several aspects of behavioural performance including arousal, attention, learning and emotion. It is also common knowledge that AD is an untreatable degenerative disease with very few temporary and palliative drug therapies. Neural stem cell (NSC) grafts present a potential and innovative strategy for the treatment of many disorders of the central nervous system including AD, with the possibility of providing a more permanent remedy than present drug treatments. After grafting, these cells have the capacity to migrate to lesioned regions of the brain and differentiate into the necessary type of cells that are lacking in the diseased brain, supplying it with the cell population needed to promote recovery. The present article aims to review the main aspects of Alzheimer's disease and to explore the use of neural stem cells grafts as alternative treatment for the consequent functional deterioration.
Discovering and promoting ways that help regulate emotions has been a recurrent concern in the field of psychology, given that how one feels and reacts to and expresses emotions can have both short- and long-term effects on physical and mental health. Many psychological strategies that can influence this process, such as reappraisal, attention allocation, and suppression, have been previously investigated. The aim of the present work was to review the emotion regulation potential of yoga practice, given that it combines techniques that foster positive psychological outcomes. The results suggest that yoga produces improvements in emotional functioning in healthy subjects and people who suffer from some physical illnesses, particularly in psychological self-reported variables. Evidence regarding behavioral and neurophysiological correlates remains less well-established. Mechanisms that possibly mediate the relationship between yoga and emotion regulation are discussed and methodologies are considered, with suggestions for future studies. In summary, emerging evidence suggests that yoga may help foster healthier psychological responses, indicating its potential as an emotion regulation strategy.
The present article reports the results of a systematic review on the potential benefits of the combined use of virtual reality (VR) and non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) as a novel approach for rehabilitation. VR and NIBS are two rehabilitation techniques that have been consistently explored by health professionals, and in recent years there is strong evidence of the therapeutic benefits of their combined use. In this work, we reviewed research articles that report the combined use of VR and two common NIBS techniques, namely transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Relevant queries to six major bibliographic databases were performed to retrieve original research articles that reported the use of the combination VR-NIBS for rehabilitation applications. A total of 16 articles were identified and reviewed. The reviewed studies have significant differences in the goals, materials, methods, and outcomes. These differences are likely caused by the lack of guidelines and best practices on how to combine VR and NIBS techniques. Five therapeutic applications were identified: stroke, neuropathic pain, cerebral palsy, phobia and post-traumatic stress disorder, and multiple sclerosis rehabilitation. The majority of the reviewed studies reported positive effects of the use of VR-NIBS. However, further research is still needed to validate existing results on larger sample sizes and across different clinical conditions. For these reasons, in this review recommendations for future studies exploring the combined use of VR and NIBS are presented to facilitate the comparison among works.
Together with an analysis of previous works, we suggest that green juice did not cause an improvement in metabolic function and there is a need for further research on this issue, mainly through different interventions and other samples.
The authors aimed to investigate the effects of an intervention based on interactive game set with the movement sensor Kinect on children with cerebral palsy (CP). Twenty-eight participants were recruited. Their age was between 3 and 12 years old, and rated as level I, II, or III on the Gross Motor Function Classification System. They played two games from the Xbox 360 Kinect system and were evaluated using the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) after a period of 8 weeks. The intervention led to significant motor function improvement as increase of the global scores on the GMFM (p < .001). Rehabilitation interventions using the Xbox 360 Kinect interactive games may represent useful tools for children with CP.
Memory deficits are common during aging, but little is known about the impact of environmental and genetic variables on memory. The genes SLC30A3 and SEP15 are, respectively, responsible for transporting zinc and selenium, micronutrients that are neuroprotective agents. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nutrigenetic interactions on the memory scores of volunteers more than 50 years old. For this cross-sectional study, 240 individuals were enrolled. Micronutrient dosage was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The SNPs rs5859, rs5854, and rs561104 in SEP15 and rs73924411 and rs11126936 in SLC30A3 were determined by real-time PCR. The evaluations of verbal and visual memory were performed using the Weschler Memory Scalerevised and the Rey's verbal learning test. A gene versus nutrient interaction was observed for SLC30A3 rs73924411 and zinc concentration. Carriers of the T allele had higher scores for short-term and long-term verbal memories than CC homozygotes only when zinc serum concentration was below the recommended level (p value for the interaction for short-term verbal memory = 0.011, p value for the interaction for long-term verbal memory = 0.039). For SEP15, C carriers of the rs5845 SNP allele had higher verbal learning memory scores than TT homozygotes (0.13 ± 1.13 vs. -1.10 ± 1.20, p = 0.034). Our results suggest the influence of genetic polymorphisms on memory score and identify gene versus nutrient interactions between zinc serum concentration and memory score.
