Este estudo teve por objetivo analisar os desafios e as oportunidades para o desenvolvimento de atividades esportivas na natureza em Porto Alegre, Brasil. Foram realizadas 29 entrevistas com representantes de organizações ligadas a essas atividades e oito observações de grupos de praticantes. Os resultados indicaram que a escolha de locais apropriados para a realização dessas atividades e as medidas para evitar a superlotação dos locais de prática representam desafios; e o potencial de envolvimento de praticantes, instrutores e comunidades locais na manutenção do meio natural e na gestão de atividades esportivas na natureza representam oportunidades. Em conclusão, o estudo demonstrou que existem áreas da cidade em que essas atividades devem ser evitadas. No entanto, por meio de gerenciamento proativo e promoção de atividades esportivas na natureza, as oportunidades podem mitigar os desafios.
O Movimento Olímpico internacional (MO) integra as instituições ligadas ao desporto, sendo o Olimpismo o quadro ideológico que sustenta o MO. O Olimpismo visa promover uma cultura de competição nobre e leal que seja promotora de desenvolvimento e progresso, sendo Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) o agente principal desta superestrutura desportiva. O presente estudo tem por objetivo apresentar os direitos humanos como uma linha ideológica de orientação estratégica do COI no período que decorreu entre os Jogos Olímpicos (JO) de Atenas (1896) e os de Pequim (2008). Trata-se de uma análise de conteúdo documental seguindo a metodologia de pesquisa qualitativa na perspetiva sócio-histórica. Os documentos analisados foram as Atas das Sessões do COI realizadas entre 1894 e 2008, tendo sido analisadas 9.111 páginas de 119 atas. A investigação teve como resultado a identificação dos direitos humanos como um subcategoria do desenvolvimento humano, considerado uma das grandes linhas ideológicas de orientação estratégica do COI. O desenvolvimento humano esteve ligado ao crescimento dos JO, visto como sendo parte de um processo natural; à necessidade de respeito aos direitos humanos e à preservação ambiental como condições indispensáveis ao desenvolvimento sustentável do MO. Por fim, concluímos que o Olimpismo deve ser considerado como um catalisador de mudanças e de grandes transformações sociais em defesa dos direitos humanos e ao serviço do desenvolvimento humano.
