Identifying and quantifying the potential causes of damages to a construction and evaluating its current stability have become an imperative task in today's world. However, the existence of variables, unknown conditions and a complex geometry hinder such work, by hampering the numerical results that simulate its behavior. Of the mentioned variables, the following can be highlighted: (i) the lack of historical information; (ii) the mechanical properties of the material; (iii) the initial geometry and (iv) the interaction with other structures. Within the field of remote sensors, the laser scanner and photogrammetric systems have become especially valuable for construction analysis. Such sensors are capable of providing highly accurate and dense geometrical data with which to assess a building's condition. It is also remarkable, that the latter provide valuable radiometric data with which to identify the properties of the materials, and also evaluate and monitor crack patterns. Motivated by this, the present article investigates the potential offered by the combined use of photogrammetric techniques (DIC and SfM), as well as geometrical (NURBs and Hausdorff distance) and numerical strategies (FEM) to assess the origin of the damage (through an estimation of the initial conditions) and give an evaluation of the current stability (considering the deformation and the damage).
Dowel-type fasteners are one of the most used type of connections in timber joints. Its design follows the equations included in the Eurocode 5. The problem with these equations is that they do not adequately contemplate the resistive capacity increase of these joints, when using configurations which provoke the so-called rope effect. This effect appears when using threaded surface dowels instead of flat surface dowels, expansion kits or nut-washer fixings at the end of the dowel. The standards consider this increase through a constant value, which is a poor approximation, because it is clearly variable, depending on the joint displacement and because is much bigger, especially when using nut-washer fixings. It is also very important because of the rope effect trigger interesting mechanisms that avoids fragile failures without warning of the joints. For these reasons, it is essential to know how these configurations work, how they help the joint to resist the external loads and how much is the increase resistance capacity in relationship with the joint displacement. The methods used to address these issues consisted of a campaign of experimental tests using actual size specimens with flat surface dowels, threaded surface dowels and dowels with washer-nut fixings at their ends. The resistance capacity results obtained in all the cases has been compared with the values that will come using the equations in the standards. After the tests the specimens were cut to analyze the timber crushings, their widths, the positions and level of plasticizations suffer in the steel dowels and in the washer-nut fixings and the angle formed in the dowel plastic hinges. With all this information the failure mode suffered by the joints has been identified and compared with the ones that the standards predict. The results for the size materials and types of joints studied shows that the crush width average values go from 20 mm with flat surface dowels, to 24 mm in threaded to 32 mm in threaded with washer-nut fixings. The rope effect force/displacement goes from 100 N/m in threaded surface dowels to 500 N/m in threaded with washer-nut fixings. Finally, the load capacities are on average 290% higher those indicated in the standard. The main conclusion is that the rope effect force should be considered in the standards in more detail as a function of multiple variables, especially the displacement of the joint.
ABSTRACT:Accurate studies of cultural heritage structures usually require the application of combined techniques to understand its structural behaviour. It is in this context, where the article present a set of procedures based on the dual combination of photogrammetric methodologies (image-based modelling and digital image correlation) and the finite element method to understand the structural behaviour of these structures. Through the interpretation of the different obtained products, by the defined approach, it is possible to estimate and evaluate the causes of the structural damage that the analysed infrastructure can suffer and also design subsequent restoration mechanisms, always from a perspective of minimal intrusion to the structure.This case of study aims to validate the methodology presented, using as an example a case of vernacular architecture (a dome) in Sejas de Aliste (Zamora, Spain).
This paper presents a multidisciplinary methodology to evaluate an underground wine cellar structure using non-invasive techniques. In particular, a historical subterranean wine cellar that presents a complex structure and whose physical properties are unknown is recorded and analyzed using geomatics and geophysics synergies. To this end, an approach that integrates terrestrial laser scanning and ground penetrating radar is used to properly define a finite element-based structural model, which is then used as a decision tool to plan architectural restoration actions. The combination of both techniques implies the registration of external and internal information that eases the construction of structural models. Structural simulation for both stresses and deformations through FEM allowed identifying critical structural elements under great stress or excessive deformations. In this investigation, the ultimate limit state of cracking was considered to determine allowable loads due to the brittle nature of the material. This allowed us to set limit values of loading on the cellar structure in order to minimize possible damage.
This paper presents a multidisciplinary approach to reverse engineering and structural analysis of electricity transmission tower structures through the combination of laser scanning systems and finite element methodology. The use of laser scanning technology allows the development of both drawings and highly accurate three-dimensional geometric models that reliably reproduce geometric reality of towers structures, detecting imperfections, and particularities of their assembly. Due to this, it is possible to analyze and quantify the effect of these imperfections in their structural behavior, taking into account the actual geometry obtained, different structural models, and load hypotheses proposed. The method has been applied in three different types of metal electricity transmission towers with high voltage lines located in Guadalajara (Spain) in order to analyze its structural viability to accommodate future increased loads with respect that which are currently subjected.

Present work proposes a recycling form of multilayer food packages to avoid their incineration, landfill of wastes or re-using of their individual components. The manufacturing process of the material consists of binding several sheets by the non-simultaneous application of temperature and pressure, these being bound by the fusion of the polyethylene, without any other adhesives. The influence of elected variables (temperature, pressure, time and number of sheets) on the mechanical properties is determined. Bending tests in three points were carried out, with the purpose of obtaining flexural strength and flexural modulus. Finally, the reliability was determined through the method of Weibull using different failure estimators for the most appropriate materials (relative to flexural strength and porosity values). Light microscopy to obtain information about defectology before and after tests was used. The results obtained by this type of material are very similar to those presented by wood-based materials and present good reliability from the strength point of view.
This work reports the results obtained over several years of research into the application of different geomatic techniques in the field of civil engineering and, in particular, in their application to the management of road systems and associated structures. Among the main advances obtained are the quantification of parameters during the inventorying and inspection of infrastructures, the metric quality of the results and the development of hardware and software tools for the automation of road systems management.
