Aunque a lo largo de la Edad Moderna se pretendió acabar con la antigua idea que disponía la caridad como algo plenamente teológico y que pretendía servir tanto a quien recibía la ayuda como a la persona que la otorgaba, todavía en el siglo xviii, dentro del imaginario colectivo, se percibían las limosnas como un medio de salvación del alma para aquel que colaboraba a aliviar las penurias de los necesitados. Será precisamente en este sentido en el que prestaremos atención a las cofradías, tanto en las funciones asistenciales que protagonizaban para con sus miembros, como en aquellas ocasiones en que desplegaban algún tipo de ayuda a personas ajenas a la misma. Así, tomando como principal fuente documental el conocido Expediente General de Cofradías, el objetivo de este trabajo es el de mostrar una visión de conjunto de las hermandades asturianas en los momentos finales del Antiguo Régimen, girando el grueso de la investigación en torno a dos cuestiones. En primer lugar, nos ocuparemos de las bases económicas de estas cofradías, para centrarnos a continuación, y teniendo presente el alcance de los caudales de las mismas, en las ayudas y socorros que se llevaron a cabo por estas asociaciones laicas asturianas a lo largo de todo el territorio.
En el Siglo de la Razón proliferaron los tratados dónde, por primera vez en la historia, se ponía de relieve la necesidad de educar de forma conveniente a las mujeres. Sin embargo, a pesar del reconocimiento que los Ilustrados otorgaron al sexo femenino, siguieron relegando a éstas a las paredes del hogar, exhortándoles a quedarse fuera del mundo del trabajo extra-doméstico, reservado sólo para los hombres de la familia. No obstante, la necesidad obligaba, y cuando los recursos u hombres de una casa escaseaban, la mujer tenía que salir a buscarse el sustento. Este es el caso de cientos de mujeres del Principado de Asturias, dónde, a mediados del siglo XVIII, la realidad femenina difería de lo que lo que se consideraba ideal. Este trabajo arrojará pues luz, en un campo hasta ahora desconocido: el del mundo profesional de las mujeres asturianas del Setecientos, dónde comprobaremos cómo en ocasiones llegaban a adquirir, gracias a su status profesional, papeles relevantes dentro de la sociedad.
Esta nueva obra coordinada por la profesora Mª. Ángeles Faya Díaz, es una continuación de las investigaciones que su grupo de trabajo ha venido realizando durante los últimos años, y cuyo refl ejo más claro lo tenemos en los diversos volúmenes colectivos que han ido viendo la luz a lo largo de la última década.El origen de este último, se encuentra, precisamente, en unas jornadas que bajo un título casi idéntico al del libro "Las ciudades españolas en la Edad Moderna. Oligarquías urbanas y poder municipal", se celebraron en Oviedo durante el mes de diciembre del año 2012.El volumen se divide en tres bloques, que a grandes rasgos, se centran en: el poder municipal, los patrimonios de las oligarquías, y el desarrollo urbano.
