The model considers items that appear once or twice in the system with reliability configuration such as series and parallel, with or without preventive replacement policy. The stochastic optimization based on Scatter Search metaheuristic is used to set inventory levels in order to minimize the mean total downtime due to lack of parts and respecting the statistical constraints over the total amount spent for the planning horizon. The results indicated that, for example, if the cost constraint of R$ 550,000 for 10 years is increased by 9.1%, the mean total downtime is reduced by 55.9% (from 617 to 272 hours). Therefore, it demonstrates that optimization of inventory levels based on different constraints allows us to understand the trade-off between availability and cost, which helps the company to choose inventory (stock) strategy that uses resources efficiently and meets operational expectations. Keywords: Maintenance, Inventory. The design of O&G production facilities aims at high availability and low production cost by using different configuration such as series, parallel, K-out-N, stand-by, etc. Which is the best alternative? What are the relative gains and losses? This type of question happens in most regular technical meetings of O&G companies. There are many models developed in the literature, but with restricted application in real problems because authors look for mathematical properties that are seldom in accordance with real world problems. In this paper, we approach the problem using Monte Carlo simulation and spreadsheet with the following steps: (1) Reliability modeling of time-to-failure of equipment in active and stand-by function, (2) Statistical modeling on time to carry out maintenance, (3) Reliability and Availability modeling of the system with different configurations. After that, some alternative stand-by policies are studied such as: (a) keep asset in the same function, that is, in case of failure of an asset in the active function, it returns after preventive replacement or repair; (b) Carry out rotation of functions involving the standby and active asset in operation after each outage; (c) Rotate the standby and the active asset from time to time. The analysis of results of each of these policies over the system performance and total cost can be estimated using Monte Carlo simulation. The present work uses this model, resulting in the following conclusions: (a) as more redundancies are added, cost increases (capex, more equipment under maintenance, etc.), but the reliability of the system also improves and (b) with stand-by configuration it is possible to increase system's availability. However, it is important to analyze each case in order to find the optimal solution and there is no rule-of-the-thumb to solve all problems.
In the operation of offshore O&G there is a large number of equipment that must work continuously to keep production and safety. Part of this success depends on different type of inspection activities in active and redundant equipment. However, there are some conflicting objectives: the more one inspect equipment, the higher the reliability of the system. At the same time, cost can be increased and availability reduced in case assets have to stop. In addition, more sophisticated inspection systems have a cost and, also may demand maintenance in the instrumentation. The present work proposes a model to evaluate this problem. The methodology is: (1) Probabilistic model of time-to-failure of assets, (2) Probabilistic model of maintenance time, (3) Probability model of the detection of failure by inspection, (4) Reliability and Availability model of the system, (5)Inflation in cost of part, labor, etc., (6) Discounted cash flow model. We use Monte Carlo simulation in order to solve this problem in a simple spreadsheet in order to demonstrate professionals that many problems can be scientifically analyzed using more simple tools. In real world applications, the main problem consists in the estimation of the value of an inspection system to a company. We apply the model of this paper to the analysis of this problem and find the following conclusions: If probability of detection of the inspection system is 90%, the maximum investment is US$ 12.2 million; if this probability of detection is 70%, the maximum investment is US$ 9.65 million. In addition, the work will show how to use the model to solve related problems as well.
