El proceso de secularización vivido por la sociedad e instituciones españolas en los años de la Segunda República también afectó a los militares y al propio Ejército. Desde el Gobierno y el Ministerio de la Guerra se proclamó la libertad de creencias, la asistencia a la misa de forma voluntaria o la prohibición de participar en celebraciones religiosas a modo de representación oficial. También se vieron modificados actos militares, como lo era la jura de bandera o la celebración de las fiestas patronales de cada una de las armas que componen las Fuerzas Armadas. Del mismo modo, leyes como la de enterramientos o de divorcio fueron aplicadas a militares en la misma medida que al resto de civiles. Todas ellas, y otras más, forman un todo que nos permite entender cómo fue la aplicación de la libertad religiosa en el Ejército y, concretamente, en la ciudad de Toledo.
