This process consists substantially in the conversion from forest to agricultural systems, which is the activity that drives the local economy. This new ecosystem formed requires studies that elucidate its operation, seeking to understand how this region interacts with the atmosphere. To investigate the behavior of energy balance components in a grassland ecosystem, a study was conducted at Fazenda Nossa Senhora (FNS), in Ouro Preto do Oeste, Rondônia. This study examined net radiation and sensible, latent and soil heat fluxes patterns, in the periods: wet, wet-dry, dry and dry-wet from 2000 to 2005. Measurements of sensible and latent heat fluxes were performed using the eddy covariance method. The results of these analyses showed that the partitioning of energy in the grassland were 77.8, 69.6, 50.6 and 75.2%, respectively in the wet, wet-dry, dry and dry-wet periods, for the latent heat flux and 22.5, 31.2, 46.7 and 24.7% for the sensible heat flux, indicating a higher vulnerability of grassland to seasonal changes.
Long-term meteorological analyzes suggest an increase in air temperature and a decrease in rainfall over the Amazon biome. The effect of these climate changes on the forest remains unresolved, because field observations on functional traits are sparse in time and space, and the results from remote sensing analyses are divergent. Then, we analyzed the drought response in a ‘terra firme’ forest fragment in the southwestern Amazonia, during an extreme drought event influenced by ENSO episode (2015/2017), focusing on stem growth, litter production, functional traits and forest canopy dynamics. We use the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), corrected by Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC) to generate the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and green chromatic coordinate (Gcc) vegetation indices. We monitor stem growth and measure the functional traits of trees in situ, such as the potential at which the plant loses 50% of hydraulic conductivity (P50), turgor loss point (πTLP), hydraulic safety margin (HSM) and isohydricity. Our results suggest that: (a) during the dry season, there is a smooth reduction in EVI values (browning) and an increase in the wet season (greening); (b) in the dry season, leaf flush occurs, when the water table still has a quota at the limit of the root zone; (c) the forest showed moderate resistance to drought, with water as the primary limiting factor, and the thickest trees were the most resistant; and (d) a decline in stem growth post-El-Niño 2015/2016 was observed, suggesting that the persistence of negative rainfall anomalies may be as critical to the forest as the drought episode itself.
In this study, removal of organic matter and nitrogen from a cattle slaughterhouse wastewater was investigated in a two‐stage anoxic–aerobic biological system, followed by UV‐C disinfection. Ecotoxicity of the raw, biotreated, and disinfected wastewater against the microalgae Scenedesmus sp. was evaluated in short‐term tests, while the potential of the microalgae as a nutrient removal step was addressed in long‐term experiments. Throughout 5 operational phases, the biological system was subjected to gradual reduction of the hydraulic retention time (8–1.5 day), increasing the organic (0.21–1.11 kgCOD·m−3·day−1) and nitrogen (0.05–0.28 kgN·m−3· day−1) loading rates. COD and total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) removal ranged within 83%–97% and 83%–99%, respectively. While providing alkalinity source, effluent TAN concentrations were below 5 mg·L‐1. Nitrate was the main nitrification product, while nitrite levels remained low (<1 mgN·L‐1). Upon supplementation of external COD as ethanol, total nitrogen removal reached up to 90% at the highest load (0.28 kgN·m−3·day−1). After UV‐C treatment, 3‐log reduction of total coliforms was attained. The 96‐hr ecotoxicity tests showed that all non‐diluted samples tested (raw, biologically treated and UV‐C irradiated wastewater) were toxic to microalgae. Nevertheless, these organisms were able to acclimate and grow under the imposed conditions, allowing to achieve nitrogen and phosphorous removal up to 99.1% and 43.0%, respectively. Practitioner points The treatment of a slaughterhouse wastewater in an anoxic–aerobic biological system followed by a UV‐C disinfection step was assessed. The pre‐denitrification system showed efficient simultaneous removal of organic matter and nitrogen from the wastewater under increasing applied loads. UV‐C disinfection worked effectively in reducing coliforms from the biotreated effluent, boosting the performance of microalgae on nutrients removal. Despite the toxicity to microalgae, they were capable to acclimate to the aqueous matrices tested, reducing efficiently the nutrients content. The combined stages of treatment presented great capacity for depleting up to 97% COD, 99% nitrogen, and 43% phosphorous.
CONVERSION OF TROPICAL FORESTS IN LIVESTOCK SYSTEMS IN THE AMAZON: WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE MICROCLIMATE OF THE REGION?ABSTRACT: The Amazon has been direct target of indiscriminate human action, which always results in advance of deforestation, affecting the natural balance of this ecosystem. The objective of this study was to elucidate the possible implications of changes in the use of land in the Amazon regional climate. We analyzed the behavior of precipitation, specific humidity, net radiation and energy flows in two ecosystems located in southwestern Amazonia, with an area of tropical forest and pasture area, in the years 1999-2010. The measurements were performed by instruments installed on micrometeorological towers of the LBA. The data of energy flows were obtained by the eddy covariance method. The results showed a decrease of 17% in precipitation and 8.3% in the specific humidity due to changes in land use. The grassland net radiation was 5.8% (wet season) and 19.0% (dry season) lower than the forest. The latent heat flux was 9.3% (wet season) and 32.4% (dry season) than in the grassland flux region, while the sensible heat flux was 11.5% (wet season) and 18.7% (dry period) higher in relation to the forest region. Such changes in microclimate aspects corroborate the
