Tradicionalmente se ha tenido la percepción de que la mujer en el cine de terror a ocupado un rol pasivo que le llevaba a asumir, casi siempre, el papel de víctima, subyugada en todo momento a los personajes masculinos del texto fílmico. Por este motivo el cine de terror es concebido de forma habitual como un género culturalmente dominado y consumido por hombres, producido por una industria que victimiza y castiga a la mujer una y otra vez. Partiendo de esta premisa y aprovechando la crítica de corte sociopolítico presente en La noche de los muertos vivientes (Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero, 1968) y su remake del año 1990, nos planteamos un análisis de la crítica elaborada por Romero al patriarcado en ambas películas y qué aporta esta al rol de la mujer como víctima tradicional del cine de terror.
La proliferación de las plataformas de vídeo bajo demanda y la globalización del terror televisivo en los últimos años ha hecho que monstruos representativos de la cultura popular occidental comiencen a aparecer en contextos nacionales en los que no suele ser habitual encontrarlos. Partiendo de esta premisa, este artículo se centra en el estudio de aquellos factores culturales, sociales y económicos que han contribuido a la popularización de las narrativas de zombis en Corea del Sur. Así mismo, analizaremos la serie Kingdom (Netflix: 2019-) con el objetivo de desentrañar las novedades narrativas que pudiera incorporar con respecto a las ficciones occidentales dedicadas a esta criatura, prestando especial atención a la forma en la que la naturaleza metafórica del muerto viviente se reformula adaptándola a las ansiedades culturales de la sociedad surcoreana.

Desde que en 1968 se estrenara La noche de los muertos vivientes (Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero, 1968) el zombi ha funcionado como una de las figuras alegóricas más importantes del cine de terror. Ahora que las ficciones televisivas están de moda, convirtiéndose en uno de los fenómenos culturales más notables de los últimos tiempos, el género ha conseguido evolucionar gracias al formato serializado. El potencial metafórico que caracteriza a esta criatura se ha visto revitalizado por la aparición de narrativas que nos invitan a ponernos en su piel, dotándolo de capacidades cognitivas que lo convierten en protagonista de sus propias historias. Nuestro objetivo, por tanto, consiste en estudiar el origen de la humanización del muerto viviente y, por último, analizar la serie In the Flesh (BBC Three: 2013-2014), uno de los casos que mejor han sabido utilizar esta novedosa particularidad.
