Bevor ich darauf eingehe, was Transfer in der Lehre bedeutet, ist es zunächst wichtig, den Begriff Transfer näher zu definieren. Früher wurde unter Transfer oftmals nur der Technologietransfer verstanden. Dies halte ich inzwischen für überholt. Aus meiner Sicht bedeutet Transfer vor allem, Forschungsergebnisse gesellschaftlich nutzbar zu machen. Dies kann im Rahmen eines konkreten Auftragsforschungsprojekts sein, durch die Entwicklung und die Einführung eines Produkts oder aber auch durch Aufbereitung von Forschungsergebnissen in einer Ausstellung. Die Einführung eines Produkts kann dabei ebenfalls sehr weit gefasst werden, so kann aus meiner Sicht auch die aus der aktuellen Forschung heraus erfolgte Entwicklung neuer Materialien für den Schulunterricht als Transfer gewertet werden. Aus dieser breiten Definition des Begriffs Transfer folgernd, umfasst aus meiner Sicht auch Transfer in der Lehre ein breites Umsetzungsspektrum.
Wer heute über »Medien« spricht, denkt nur selten an das schon in der Antike bekannte fünfte Element, den Äther. Gerade im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert haben Äther-Diskurse jedoch erheblich an der Formierung des modernen Medienbegriffs mitgewirkt. Im Namen des Äthers erprobte man experimentell Thesen, die erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg unter dem Namen »Massenmedialität« eine Adresse fanden. Eine Gemengelage aus physikalischem und okkultistischem Wissen gestattete es, dieses zentrale Konzept moderner Medientheorie lange vor ihrem Begriff zu denken.
Die Bildtelegraphie ist das vergessene Vorläufermedium von Fax und Fernsehen. Dieses Buch erzählt ihre Geschichte am Leitfaden ihrer Patente und schließt damit auf innovative Weise eine medienhistorische Lücke. Patente werden dabei in ihrem zwischen formaler Strenge und sprachlich-diagrammatischem Überfluss oszillierenden Eigensinn als Quellen einer Wissensgeschichte technischer Medien erschlossen.
