Acoustic manipulation by an ultrasonic phased array provides an entirely new approach to processes such as coalescence, mixing, separation, and evaporation occurring in the generation of new materials, physical property measurement, the biomedical industry, etc. However, to date, ultrasonic phased arrays have not been fully investigated for applications in fluid manipulation. This paper provides contactless coalescence and mixing techniques for droplets in air by controlling the acoustic potential by using an ultrasonic phased array. We focused on mode oscillation to propose an efficient mixing technique for liquid without contact. A comparison of mixing performance between cases with mode oscillation and without mode oscillation showed that the flow induced by mode oscillation promotes droplet mixing. Our paper demonstrates the feasibility of contactless coalescence and mixing as a first step in fluid manipulation with a phased array.
Objective The long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may induce adverse events in many organs, including the stomach. The chronic use of PPIs has been associated with the growth of fundic gland polyps (FGPs) and of gastric black spots. This study assessed the incidence of gastric lesions with cobblestone-like appearance in PPI users. Methods The clinical characteristics and endoscopic findings of patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy after using PPIs for at least six months were analyzed. The biopsy specimens from patients with gastric cobblestone-like lesions (GCLLs) were examined histopathologically. Patients This study analyzed 171 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy after more than 6 months of PPI use in Mitsugi Public General Hospital from January 1, 2015, to March 31, 2016. Results Of the 171 patients, 60 (35.1%) had GCLLs and 111 (64.9%) did not. There were no significant between-group differences in age, sex, duration of PPI use, and receipt of Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy. Atrophic gastritis of the corpus was significantly less frequent in the GCLL than in the non-GCLL group (55.0% vs. 47.8%, p=0.0097). Among the GCLL group, histological examinations of 24 patients revealed cystic dilation of the fundic gland in 19 (79.2%), parietal cell hyperplasia in 18 (75.0%), and cytoplasmic vacuolation in 7 (29.2%). Conclusion GCLLs occurred frequently in long-term PPI users, especially in patients without atrophic gastritis. The pathological findings of GCLLs included parietal cell hyperplasia and fundic gland cysts. The clinical importance of these new lesions remains uncertain, but they should be observed carefully.
contactless manipulation of matter is essential for studying physical phenomena. Acoustic manipulation of liquid samples using ultrasonic phased arrays provides a novel and attractive solution for mid-air manipulation, such as levitation, transportation, coalescence, mixing, separation, evaporation, and extraction, with a simple and single sequence. Despite the importance of gravity in droplet dynamics, its effect on a levitated droplet with an ultrasonic phased array remains unclear. to disseminate acoustic manipulation, better understanding of the fundamental physics of a droplet manipulated by ultrasonic phased arrays is required. Here, we show contactless levitation, transportation, and coalescence of multiple droplets under both ground and reduced gravity. Under ground gravity, the possible levitation size of the sample is limited to below the half wavelength of sound. Under reduced gravity, however, droplets that are larger than the limit can be successfully levitated, transported, and coalesced. furthermore, the threshold of sound pressure for droplet levitation and manipulation could be minimised with the suppression of nonlinear acoustic phenomena under reduced gravity. these insights promote the development of contactless manipulation techniques of droplets for future space experiment and inhabitancy.
To examine the role of T-cell subsets in immune-mediated otitis media with effusion induced by keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), we used immunohistochemical methods to investigate the kinetics of immunocytes of the middle ear (ME) and eustachian tube (ET) in healthy BALB/c mice. Antibodies against murine macrophages and granulocytes (anti-Mac-1), helper T cells (anti-Lyt-1), suppressor T cells (anti-Lyt-2), immunoglobulins (anti-IgG, -IgM, -IgA), secretory component (SC) and KLH were used. The ME exhibited a substantial immune response, whereas the response of the ET was minor and was associated with a secondary ME immune response. After KLH challenge, an effusion with an extensive infiltration of inflammatory cells (Mac-1, IgG+ and IgM+ cells) was observed at days 1 and 3 in the ME cavity and rapidly disappeared by day 7. Within the ME mucosa, a large number of cells was observed at days 1 and 3, peaking on day 7 when a submucosal lymphoid infiltration was detected. In the immune response of the ME mucosa, Mac-1 cells were the predominant cell type followed by helper T cells, IgG+ cells, IgA+ cells and then IgM+ cells. Suppressor T cells were rarely detected after KLH challenge. SC was present within ME epithelial cells from days 1 to 14.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
