L'agriculture oasienne est le résultat de l'acquisition au fil du temps de connaissances en matière de gestion adaptative des ressources naturelles, rares et précieuses. Dans l'écosystème oasien où le palmier dattier (Phoenix dactylifera L.) constitue le pivot de cette agriculture, le transfert de ces acquis se fait d'une génération à une autre à une échelle locale restreinte. Dans la région du Mzab en Algérie, les techniques de culture, les pratiques de conservation in-situ et l'utilisation des ressources génétiques du palmier dattier, constituent un savoir et savoir-faire ancestraux très riches mais faiblement sauvegardés. L'échange de ces connaissances entre les différentes palmeraies de la région est presque inexistant. Dans ces conditions le projet maghrébin RAB 98/G31 intitulé « Gestion participative des ressources génétiques du palmier dattier dans les oasis du Maghreb » a développé des outils de sensibilisation et de diffusion (foires, échanges de visites, émissions radio . . .) permettant une meilleure valorisation de ces savoirs et savoir-faire. L'impact des outils employés est amplement justifié à travers la présentation de quelques exemples concrets.
