Anadolu'nun türkleşmesi ve islâmlaşması tarihi, asrımızın başından günümüze kadar Franz Babinger, F. W. Hasluck, Fuad Köprülü, Abdülbaki Gölpınarlı, Osman Turan, Irene Melikoff ve Speros Vryonis gibi ilim adamlarını meşgul eden, dikkate diğer, kaynakları zengin ve çeşitli, çok verimli bir araştırma sâhası olmuştur. Bilhassa, elîm vefatının 25. yıldönümünü üzüntüyle idrak ettiğimiz merhum Fuad Köprülü'nün, başta temel ve klasik eseri Türk Edebiyatında İlk Mutasavvıflar'ı olmak üzere, muhtelif kitapları ve makaleleriyle bu sahayı adeta apayrı bir araştırma disiplini durumuna getirdiğini söylemek mübalağalı sayılmamalıdır. O, "Anadolu'da İslamiyet" adındaki klâsikleşmiş meşhur makalesinde bu konunun sanki araştırma planını çizmiş ve pek çok meseleye dikkati çekmiştir. Bununla beraber, aradan geçen şu kadar yıldır değerli çalışmalarla bir hayli mesafe katedildiğini de belirtmek lazımdır. Ne var ki, bahis konusu sahanın araştırılıp aydınlatılacak daha bir çok meselesi bulunmaktadır. Bunlardan birini de, Anadolu'ya Türkler'in yerleşmesiyle birlikte başlayan islâmlaşma ve türkleşme sürecinde müslüman Türkler'le yerli hıristiyan halk arasında cereyan eden karşılıklı dini tesirler ve bu arada evliya yahut aziz kültleri teşkil eder.
Alevîliğin tarihi, dünya tarihindeki benzeri birçok olgu gibi kökü uzun yüzyıllara dayanan bir süreç oluşturur. Bu süreç, uzun ve belli bir kronolojik boyutta, belli bir mekânda bazen çok yavaş ta olsa değişime uğrayarak bugüne kadar gelen çok ta homojen olmayan bir toplumsal yapının ürünüdür. Dolayısıyla bu tarihin bütün yönleriyle analizi, sistemli bir biçimde kavranması, anlaşılması ve anlatılması hayli çetin ve güç bir konu olarak böyle bir makale çerçevesinde tabii ki tam anlamıyla mümkün olamayacaktır. Bu makalenin amacı da, böyle bir iddiadan olabildiğince kaçınarak, bugünkü durumda tarihsel ve aktüel boyutlarıyla ortada duran Alevîlik olgusunu anlamaya yardımcı olabilecek genel bir tarihsel perspektif vermeyi denemektir.
Anadolu ve İran: İki büyük medeniyetin, iki büyük kültürün vatanı olan bu topraklar, antik devirlerden XVII. asrın neredeyse sonlarına kadar birbiriyle savaştılar. Lidyalılar ve Persler; İskender ve Dara; Romalılar ve Sasanîler; Anadolu Selçukluları ve Moğollar, İlhanlılar; Osmanlılar ve Timurlular ve nihayet Osmanlılar ve Safevîler. Bu savaşların bazılarının sonunda İran Anadolu'yu istila etti. XVI.-XVII. asır Osmanlı-Safevî mücadeleleri, işte bu uzun çatışmalar tarihinin son perdesiydi. Bu mücadeleler, İslam tarihinin genel seyri içinde bir mânada, Sünnilik-Şiilik rekabetinin teolojik boyuttan siyasi boyuta intikal eden çok mühim bir safhasını teşkil ettiği kadar, Osmanlı tarihinin de en önemli dönemlerinden birini meydana getirir.
