L’analyse de cette expérience de développement sur le long terme révèle plusieurs paradoxes. L’économie algérienne a bénéficié d’une masse d’investissements relativement très importante, tandis que son taux de croissance économique est resté très modeste, notamment par rapport aux autres pays maghrébins. Cependant, la faiblesse de la croissance économique n’a pas empêché son indicateur de développement humain de connaître une forte croissance entre 1970 et 2011, dépassant la moyenne mondiale et celle des pays arabes ; comme elle n’a pas empêché non plus la réduction de la pauvreté monétaire. Enfin, cette analyse rétrospective permet de montrer que les cycles économiques, faits de croissance et de crise, entre 1962 et 2012, ne correspondent pas aux cycles politiques que l’Algérie a connus et qui servent souvent de trame de fond à l’analyse économique traditionnelle.
