There is an increasingly growing trend towards integrating scientific research training into undergraduate medical education. The importance and compulsoriness of this trend has been greatly highlighted at the Boyer Commission on Educating Undergraduates in the Research University. Despite the importance and benefits of undergraduate research, attempts of medical schools to encourage undergraduates to take part in formal research training during undergraduate medical education remain unsatisfactory. This article serves as a ‘reminder call’ highlighting the requisite to integrate scientific research training into undergraduate medical curricula.

Our results were fairly comparable to the Western studies. Medical educators should carefully look into all UR barriers and consider implementing applicable solutions.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are uncommon lesions that involve the axial and appendicular bones. Although biologically benign, ABCs have the tendency to assume an aggressive behavior causing local destruction of the underlying bone and neighboring soft tissues. Morphologically, ABCs are composed of cyst-like cavities filled with blood and bounded by an array of diverse cells including fibroblasts, inflammatory infiltrates and osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells. From a molecular perspective, the osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells harbor high expression of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B (RANK) receptors, whereas the neoplastic stromal cells harbor high expression of RANK ligand (RANKL). The RANK-RANKL interaction has been implicated in the carcinogenesis of ABCs and giant cell tumor of bones (GCTBs). Currently, the optimal management of ABCs remains a hotly debated topic. There are a multitude of treatment modalities (that is, surgery, sclerotherapy, radiotherapy and selective arterial embolization), and each modality has its own benefits, morbidity and risk of complications. The local aggressiveness of ABC and its high rates of relapse following treatment has demanded the march towards discovering more innovative therapies. One of such therapies is denosumab, a monoclonal antibody targeted against the RANKL. Denosumab is already approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of adults and skeletally mature adolescents with GCTB that is unamenable to surgery, or initial surgery is anticipated to result in significant morbidity. However, denosumab is not approved by the FDA for the management of ABCs. However, taking into consideration the morphological similarity between GCTBs and ABCs, some treating physicians have logically opted to use denosumab in an off-label manner to treat select ABCs. To the best of knowledge, no study has attempted to summarize the related literature on the use of denosumab in ABCs. Therefore, the primary aim of this study is to narratively review all the available literature about the efficacy and safety of the use of off-label denosumab in the management of patients with ABCs.

Aims: To explore the public awareness, knowledge, and attitudes of Saudi women towards Pap smear as a screening test for cervical cancer.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study took place in four major secondary and tertiary healthcare hospitals located in the capital city Riyadh between January 2016 and June 2016. A self-administered, coded, close-ended survey was randomly distributed to 1000 non-single women attending the obstetrics/gynecology outpatient clinics or inpatient wards.Results: Five hundred and seven women participated in the survey (overall response rate: 50.7%). The vast majority of respondents aged between 20-40 years (88%) and were married (94.1%), Saudi citizens (96.5%), university educated (45.6%) and housewives (64.5%). A total of 234 women (46.2%) did not hear whatsoever about Pap smear previously. Only 273 women (53.9%) heard about it, mostly during their hospital visits for obstetric/gynecologic purposes (57.1%). A sum of 381 women (75.2%) did not do a single Pap smear previously. A sum of 383 women (75.5%) reported that their physicians never advised them to do Pap smear. Regarding knowledge of Pap smear, 415 women (82%) did not know when to start doing Pap smear, 471 women (92.9%) did not know how frequently they should do Pap smear and 476 women (93.9%) did not know when to stop doing Pap smear. Moreover, 456 women (89.9%) did not know the difference between Pap smear and high vaginal swap. A total of 429 women (84.6%) never requested their physician to do Pap smear. Almost all women (95.3%) expressed an interest in knowing more information about the Pap smear screening test.Conclusion: The awareness and knowledge of Pap smear as a screening test for cervical cancer among Saudi population living in Riyadh is unsatisfactory. There is an urgent necessity to educate and foster awareness concerning cervical cancer and its screening through Pap smear.

Students demonstrated positive attitudes toward UR activities. The relationships between participation in UR activities and male gender, increased number of years spent at medical college and higher GPA were directly proportional.

ObjectivesTo determine the percentage of students involved in extracurricular activities (EAs), explore relationships between participation in EAs and students’ characteristics, and investigate students’ perceptions (i.e., motives and barriers) towards participation in EAs. MethodsAn online, anonymous, random, cross-sectional, self-rating survey was administered during spring 2015-2016 to second-year and third-year students (n=340). Chi-square test was used to explore relationships between participation in EAs and students’ characteristics. Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare the mean 5-point Likert scale responses according to students’ characteristics. Statistical significance was determined as p<0.05. ResultsTwo hundred thirty-seven students participated in the survey (n=237/340, response rate: 69.7%). Only 143 students (60.3%, n=140/237) participated in EAs, and this percentage significantly differed by gender (χ2(1, N=237)=4.3205, p<0.037), nationality (χ2(1, N=237)=18.7069, p<0.000) and cumulative grade point average (cGPA, χ2(1, N=237)=17.8296, p<0.000). The top three motives towards participation in EAs were: “improve resume” (83.5%, n=198), “improve networking skills” (82.7%, n=196) and “improve teamwork skills” (76.8%, n=182). The top three barriers towards participation in EAs were: “lack of time” (61.2%, n=145), “lack of equal opportunities in EAs” (57.8%, n=137) and “lack of curricular emphasis of EAs” (52.7%, n=125). There was a statistically significant difference of means between male (mean=2.8) and female (mean=3.2) students regarding the following barrier: “affect academic performance negatively” (U=5389.5, p<0.002). ConclusionsThe participation rate in EAs was satisfactory, and positively related to students’ characteristics of male gender, non-Saudi nationality and high cGPA. Medical schools should facilitate all potential motives and resolve all associated barriers towards participation in EAs.

Research involvement by medical students is an essential need of the twenty-first century and models like URC could provide crucial platform for research training to the new generation of physician-scientists.

None
