We demonstrate the spontaneous In-whisker formation from combinatorially sputtered YIn 3 thin films. The morphology and extrusion kinetics of In-whiskers are affected by the local chemical composition. In-whiskers are extruded from the film surface upon exposure to atmosphere, but not in vacuum. Consequently, In-whisker growth is accompanied by an increase in oxygen content in the films. The results presented enable controlled processing of 1-D submicrometer/nanostructured materials with respect to morphology and growth kinetics.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
