The main purpose of this study is to improve the understanding and comprehension of the supply chain leadership concept. To this aim, the paper systematically reviews and synthesises the current academic literature in this emerging field, unveiling research gaps and discussing a future research agenda. The review was performed by selecting papers from leading journals in the operations and supply chain management field (using the Scopus and Web of Science academic search engines). Overall, 51 relevant papers were identified through the review process. After providing an overview of classical leadership theories, the paper introduces a definition for the supply chain leadership concept. The theoretical characterisation of such concept is then investigated, through the identification of dominant leadership theories employed to explain and characterise supply chain leadership. Also, the study provides a thematic analysis of supply chain leadership styles and their influence on supply chain practices. Employed research methodologies, along with geographical specificities and supply chain orientations of previous studies, are also scrutinised. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to provide a holistic systematic literature review in the supply chain leadership domain. Therefore, this contribution is an important first step in order to establish robust theoretical frameworks involving the constructs of supply chain leadership and to provide a foundation for further studies in this field.
Recently, a growing interest has been devoted to the role of buying firms in promoting sustainability across supply chains. However, relatively little attention has been given to how the behaviour of a buying firm affects the performance of reverse supply chains. Within this context, this paper investigates the role of Supply Chain Leadership styles on suppliers' performance dimensions related to reverse product flows. Furthermore, the mediating role of two governance mechanisms (namely trust and legal-legitimate power) on this relationship is examined. This study employs structural equation modelling to analyse data collected from 190 manufacturing companies in Malaysia. The paper concludes that transformational and transactional leaderships are significant and positive contributors to suppliers' reverse supply chain performance; trust and power significantly mediate these relationships.
This study develops a circular supply chain management model. The review shows how CSCM promotes green supply chain management and sustainability by extending its sustainable dimension beyond the original producer. Closed-loop and open-loop supply chains are CSCM components. Using contingency theory and transaction cost theory, the CSCM model proposes that product circularity in closed-loop and open-loop supply chains affects a company's circular economy performance. The IS professional is a person endowed with certain professional skills and attributes usually formally obtained through an education process. The IS professional may also have formal skills in peripheral, non technical areas that may too be obtained through a formal education process. This is typical now in the education of IS students who are aspiring IS professional. In addition they come with a range of soft skills that may be attitudinal and influenced by life and work experiences. This paper suggests that these skills, attributes and work environment do not sit in isolation from each other, but interact in an as yet unmeasured way. How this happens with students studying towards an IS qualification is discussed here and a structural model is developed to explain the interactions. The value of this research is that a picture is presented that shows the interactions between these important elements in a quantitative way.
Organisational resilience has been identified as one of the critical factors in developing sustainable supply chains. To date, extant research discusses the role of dynamic capabilities in enhancing organisational resilience, particularly in developing and reconfiguring internal and external resources to address the changing business environment. Unfortunately, little attention has been paid to exploring the impact of buying firms’ leadership (or supply chain leadership) on the existing relationships between dynamic capabilities and organisational resilience. As a firm’s performance has a significant impact on its entire supply network (in both upstream and downstream orientations), the responsibility to improve organisational resilience could be extended to the buying or focal firms, particularly during unprecedented times such as the pandemic. This study aims to propose a conceptual framework for examining the impact of dynamic capabilities and organisational resilience. In general, this study suggests that dynamic capabilities (adaptive, absorptive, and innovative capabilities) have a significant impact on organisational resilience. Furthermore, this study proposes that supply chain leadership moderates the relationship between dynamic capabilities (adaptive, absorptive, and innovative capabilities) and organisational resilience. It is expected that this study will facilitate discussions on the need to deepen the comprehension of supply chain leadership and its influence on dynamic capabilities and organisational resilience. The study contributes to the existing literature by addressing the gaps between supply chain leadership, dynamic capabilities, and organisational resilience domains.
