Purpose
Non-gated residential communities (NGR) are now becoming significant in Jordan resulting in an increase in low and medium-income areas. This study aims to investigate the sense of community at residential level within NGR by testing the characteristics presented in the first and largest non-gated community in Jordan (Al-Sharq project).
Design/methodology/approach
Such characteristics were identified via literary reviews and visual data collected through site visits, observation and photographs of the project's physical settings. This formed the basis of a questionnaire/survey that was distributed to the residents. This research depends on the mixed-method approach (qualitative and quantitative) to achieve the research objectives. The quantitative method involved the use of a questionnaire/survey, while the qualitative method undertook a comparative process using some statistical methods for the main characteristics. The results were analysed by using descriptive statistics, comprising frequency and factor analyses.
Findings
The study concludes with a framework consisting of suggestions and recommendations to remove the main constraints on improving the quality of life for the non-gated residential community.
Practical implications
The outcome of this study will influence the decisions made by the parties involved in urban development in Jordan when designing residential neighborhoods.
Originality/value
The significance of this paper is that while the majority of studies have been on the evaluation of gated communities in developing countries, there have only been a limited of studies specifically examining the experience of residents in those environments. Therefore, this paper contributes and adds to the existing knowledge in the development of non-gated communities in a developing country.
The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable instrument to measure the counseling and educational needs of Arab families with handicapped children. One hundred and forty-three parents participated in this study to establish the construct, content and discriminant validity of the scale, together with its internal consistency and the contribution of each item to the total score.
Internet-based tools and social media are greatly developed in the tech world. Today, technology is widely accepted and used by all generations. These tools are great and very useful for students in terms of learning, collaboration and information sharing. We aim to present a model for learning programming in social learning environments with the context of the Affinity Research Group (ARG) model. The proposed model is called "Learning Programming in Social Environments within Affinity Group (LPSEAG)". We test the proposed model for two academic years. A comparative approach was used. In the experiment, we divide the students into two categories: (1) Learn programming in the context of using the LPSEAG model, (2) Learn programming in the context of social media groups. Qualitative and quantitative results are compared for the two categories. From the results obtained it was clearly found that the students' satisfaction was high on working within a group using the LPSEAG model compared to the responses of students that use social media groups only. Moreover, the quantitative results support the assumptions that the use of LPSEAG model in learning programming in the introductory programming courses enhances the learning outcomes. Learning programming in groups enhances the learning outcomes for students whatever the student's programming level. Teachers are encouraged to create students' programming groups and implement LPSEAG model to increase learning outcomes and facilitate learning environments for students over-distance. More researches are needed to develop CVLEs which encourage students to learn programming with teams over distance.
The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable questionnaire to measure students' counseling needs at United Arab Emirates University. A random sample of 348 students (267 females; 81 males) participated in this study. Content, discriminant, and items total score correlations as a means of validity were used. Internal consistency and test-retest procedures were used to examine the 60-item questionnaire reliability. The results of this study revealed that the questionnaire is highly valid and reliable. Implications are discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
