The new Mannich bases bis(1,4-diphenylthiosemicarbazide methyl) phosphinic acid H 3 L 1 and bis(1, 4-diphenylsemicarbazide methyl) phosphinic acid H 3 L 2 were synthesised from the condensation of phosphinic acid, formaldehyde with 1,4-diphenyl thiosemicarbazide and 1,4-diphenylsemicarbazide, respectively. Monomeric complexes of these ligands, of general formulae K 2 [Cr III (L n )Cl 2 ], K 3 [Mn II (L n )Cl 2 ] and K[M(L n )] (M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) or Hg(II); n = 1, 2), are reported. The mode of bonding and overall geometry of the complexes were determined through physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. These studies revealed octahedral geometries for the Cr(III), Mn(II) complexes, square planar for Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes and tetrahedral for the Zn(II) and Hg(II) complexes.

A series of new di-, tri-, and tetranuclear Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes of three new diSchiff base ligands were synthesized by two different methods. The first method involved the synthesis of the three ligands from condensation reaction of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (L′H2) with ethylenediamine (en), o-phenylenediamine (o-PD), or 4,5-dimethyl-1,2-phenylendiamine (DMPD) in a mole ratio of 2 : 1 followed by the reaction of the resulting Schiff bases ligands with Cu(II) or Co(II) ions in the presence of 2,2′-bipyridyl (L) to form the di- and trinuclear metal complexes. The second method involved the condensation of the copper complex LCu(II)L′ (L = 2,2′-bipyridyl, L′ = 4-formylbenzene-1,2-bis(olate)) with en, o-PD, or DMPD in a mole ratio of 2 : 1, respectively, followed by reaction with CuCl2 or Cu(ClO4)2 to form di-, tri-, and tetranuclear copper (II) complexes, respectively. The structures of the ligands and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, NMR, and FTIR spectra. The geometries of metal complexes were suggested according to elemental analysis, electronic spectra, thermal analyses, atomic absorption, and magnetic moments and conductivity measurements.

Two new Schiff and Mannich bases, namely, 1-Morpholinomethyl-3(1′ -N-dithiooxamide)iminoisatin (LIH) and 1-diphenylaminomethyl-3-1′-N-dithiooxamide)iminoisatin (LIIH), were prepared from condensation reaction of new Schiff base 3-(1′-N-dithiooxamide)iminoisatin (SBH) with morpholine or diphenylamine respectively in presence of formaldehyde . The structures were characterized by IR, 1HNMR, mass spectrometry, and CHN analyses. Metal complexes of the two ligands were synthesized, and their structures were characterized by elemental analyses, atomic absorption, IR and UV-visible spectra, molar conductivity, and magnetic moment determination. All complexes showed octahedral geometries except palladium complexes which were square planar. The biological activity of the prepared compounds and some selected metal complexes was tested against three types of bacteria and against cell line of human epidermoid larynx carcinoma (Hep-2).

Three new Schiff bases of N-substituted isatin LI, LII, and LIII = Schiff base of N-acetylisatin, N-benzylisatin, and N-benzoylisatin, respectively, and their metal complexes C1a,b = [Co2(LI)2Cl3]Cl, C2 = [Ni(LI)2Cl2]0.4BuOH, C3 = [CuLICl(H2O)]Cl ⋅ 0.5BuOH, C4 = [Pd(LI)2Cl]Cl, C5 = [Pt(L1)2Cl2]Cl2 ⋅ 1.8EtOH.H2O, C6a = [CoLIICl]Cl ⋅ 0.4H2O ⋅ 0.3DMSO, C6b = [CoLIICl]Cl ⋅ 0.3H2O ⋅ 0.1BuOH, C7 = [NiLIICl2], C8 = [CuLII]Cl2 ⋅ H2O , C9 = [Pd(LII)2]Cl2, C10 = [Pt(LII)2.5Cl]Cl3, C11a = [Co(LIII)]C12 ⋅ H2O, C11b = [Co(LIII)]Cl2 ⋅ 0.2H2O, and C12 = [Ni(LIII)2]Cl2, C13 = [Ni(LIII)2]Cl2 were reported. The complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, metal and chloride content, spectroscopic methods, magnetic moments, conductivity measurements, and thermal studies. Some of these compounds were tested as antibacterial and antifungal agents against Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger.
