O autor de Dom Casmurro foi uma espécie de cachaça para esse poeta, jornalista e crítico controverso, fluminense nascido em Paraíba do Sul em 1888, às vezes tão mal humorado que se tornava divertido na sua ranzinzice. Um exemplo dessa combinação peculiar de mau humor e graça: "se pudéssemos obter a média das personagens de Machado, diríamos que sua principal criação namora viúva, lê romance francês, vai passear na Tijuca, é sovina e queima rato."
