A tanulmány kiindulópontja az a feltevés, hogy a Simmelhez való viszony a kezdetektől fogva máig a francia szociológiai mezőben zajló szellemi és intézményes harcok tétje. A francia szociológiai mezőben a 19. század végétől megfigyelhető egy sajátos törésvonal, amelynek egyik oldalán a szociológia francia iskolája (Durkheim-iskola, Bourdieu stb.), a másik oldalán pedig az egyéni cselekvésre fókuszáló különféle megközelítések helyezkednek el. Ezzel a megosztottsággal (is) magyarázható, hogy Simmel francia recepciójában megkülönböztethető egy manifeszt és egy látens réteg: egyfelől Simmel műveinek, gondolatainak nyilvános értelmezése, diszkutálása, másfelől a rejtett, néma átvételek szintje. A tanulmány Simmel francia recepciójának a századfordulótól máig tartó történetéből három csomópontot emel ki: először a manifeszt Simmel-recepció kezdetéről, elsősorban Durkheim Simmelhez való viszonyáról, majd a kortárs francia Simmel-recepció irányairól ad áttekintést. Mint közismert, Durkheim és Simmel kapcsolata elutasításba fordult, míg a kortárs francia társadalomtudomány bizonyos területein lelkes fogadókészség tapasztalható Simmel irányában. A tanulmány harmadik része a Pierre Bourdieu műveiben található simmeli hatások, inspirációk bemutatásával amellett érvel, hogy talán a két szociológiai hagyomány nem, illetve nem minden tekintetben olyan összeegyeztethetetlen, ahogyan azt sokan gondolták.
