Ovitraps baited with grass infusions were evaluated in the field as oviposition attractants or stimulants for Aedes (Stegomyia) mosquitoes. Significantly higher oviposition by Aedes aegypti (L.) was observed in areas with no vegetation, but intense human presence, whereas Aedes albopictus (Skuse) oviposition was significantly higher in areas with vegetation, regardless of human presence. Ovitraps baited with infusions of Panicum maximum (Jacq.) collected significantly more eggs than controls containing tap water. Moreover, the number of eggs deposited in ovitraps baited with infusion made from fresh, mature leaves was higher compared with dried leaves or fresh, immature leaves. Anaerobically fermented of grass infusions were more attractive than either aerobically fermented or sterilized infusions of P. maximum. The fermentation age of the grass infusion also affected the oviposition response of mosquitoes. Significantly more eggs were deposited in baited ovitraps containing a fresh leaf infusion of P. maximum fermented for 15 or 20 d, compared with the controls. This demonstrates that 15- or 20-d anaerobic fermentation made of fresh, fully mature leaves of P. maximum is the optimum infusion for ovitrap-based Aedes (Stegomyia) surveillance mosquitoes in Brazil. Neglecting to consider these differences in infusion attractiveness may introduce significant variation in surveillance results.

Respostas Eletroantenográficas de Lutzomyia (Lutzomyia) longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) (Diptera: Psychodidae) a 1-octen-3-ol RESUMO-Octenol (1-octen-3-ol) é um cairomônio utilizado por vários grupos de insetos hematófagos para a localização de hospedeiros vertebrados. No entanto, o seu efeito sobre Lutzomyia (Lutzomyia) longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) nunca foi estudado. O presente trabalho avaliou as respostas eletroantenográficas (EAG) de fêmeas de L. longipalpis. Como estímulo controle utilizou-se corrente de ar, pulsos de ar e pulsos de solvente (hexano). As concentrações logarítmicas de 1-octen-3-ol testadas foram de 10 a 10 6 ηg/50µl de solvente. Observaram-se respostas olfativas significativas de 1-octen-3ol a partir de 10 3 ηg/50µl, tendo a maior amplitude na concentração 10 6 ηg/50µl (-3,33mV). Foi observada dose-dependência, ou seja, quanto maior a concentração, maior foi a resposta eletrofisiológica. Estes resultados demonstram, pela primeira vez que L. longipalpis pode detectar a presença do 1-octen-3-ol em corrente de ar. ABSTRACT-Octenol (1-octen-3-ol) is a kairomone used by haematophagous insects to locate their vertebrate hosts. However, effect of 1-octen-3-ol on Lutzomyia (Lutzomyia) longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) has never been studied. The present work evaluated the electrophysiological (EAG) responses of female L. (Lutzomyia) longipalpis. Air current, air pulse and solvent (hexane) pulse were used as control stimuli. The logarithmic concentrations of 1-octen-3-ol 10 a 10 6 ηg/50µl of solvent were tested. Significant olfactory responses were observed in the concentration of 1-octen-3-ol from 10 3 ηg/50ul with the greatest response at concentration of 10 6 ηg/50ul (-3,33mV). Dose-dependency was observed, as the concentration increased, so did the electrophysiological response. These results demonstrated, for the first time, that L. longipalpis, can detect the presence of 1-octen-3-ol in air current. The possible use of 1-octen-3-ol as kairomone for this species is discussed.

scapularis (Rondani, 1948) was studied in a small area of the Atlantic Forest, Serra do Marumbi, Morretes, Paraná, Brazil. Adults were captured with Shannon light traps for 48 nights, representing 12 nights for seven time intervals. Traps were operated from dusk to dawn. The influences on flight activity of the lunar phase, ambient temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall were analyzed. Ae. scapularis had a flight behaviour different in each of the four lunar phases. In relation to flight period, the species showed higher activity during the first three lunar intervals. Among the climatic variables, temperature and relative humidity positively influenced flight activity during the night.

A total of 594 Coqui/lellidia (Rhyncholaenia) venezue /ensis (Theobald , 191 2) specimens were eollected and the different night fli ghl aClivily in the four 11100n phases was obselved. Biological collections are important for acquiring knowledge of the biodiversity of a specific environment. Here, we organize, list and catalog adult specimens of Culicidae from the Parasitology Collection of the Basic Pathology Department at the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil, and present a databank of taxonomic and collection information for each sample. Culicids were collected using different methodologies in 18 municipalities in Paraná state, between 1967 and 1999. There are 5,739 catalogued specimens, of which 4,703 (81.94%) are identified at species level, with a diversity of 100 species. Of these, 18 are new recorded samples for Paraná, and three are new for Brazil. This collection is named the Ana Leuch Lozovei Entomological Collection in honor of the 30 years Prof Lovozei dedicated to culicid study in Paraná. The collection comprises insect vectors or potential vectors, of agents causing human diseases.
