The wood has good mechanical properties, but there is a need for improvements to the structural elements meet the demands requested. In this context, it sought this paper was to analyze the use of glass fibers in glued laminated timber beams subjected to simple bending for structural reinforcement, Verifying the increase of stiffness and strength of six laminated wood beams bonded through the adhesive Melamine Urea MUF 1242 with the liquid emulsifier 2542, reinforced with unidirectional fiberglass fabric together with epoxy resin Compound, comparing with a reference beam without reinforcement application, and also analyzing the adhesion between the reinforcement and the surface of the wood and the failure mode of each beam. The wood-wood grip and wood-fiber adhesion proved to be satisfactory. There was an increase in the stiffness of the reinforced beams and in the load of failure of the reinforced beams, with a maximum increase of 26.25% of breaking load in relation to the reference beam. The failure mode of all the beams occurred by traction, and in only one beam did not occur longitudinal shear and in two beams there was crushing of the upper lamellae of the beams by compression. The main contribution of this paper is to present the viability of using glass fibers as reinforcement for glued laminated timber beams.
ABSTRACT: The problem of the evaluation of the shear strength in RC beams strengthened with fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP) is a very complex subject. The actual most important codes/recommendations quantify the nominal shear strength by a simple sum of the contributions to concrete (Vc), steel (Vsw), and FRP (Vf). This paper presents a broad comparison between the experimental results sourced from a number of experimental investigations and the analytical formulation of the most important codes/recommendations available in literature NBR 6118 (2014), EUROCODE 2 (1992), ACI 318M (2011), ACI 440-2R (2008), fib BULLETIN 14 - TG 9.3 (2001) and CNR-DT 200 (2004) and analyses the safety factors. Experimental results of 30 RC beams strengthened with PRFC made the database. Some guides are more restrictive in respect of the others, giving a minor contribution to the strengthening and, therefore, gives more safety. Graphics Comparisons between the experimental results and the corresponding analytical formulations demonstrated the expected behavior, possible due to the use of safety factors and the design values remained below to the collapses values. This work aims to contribute to the best use of the combination of the main codes used.
ABSTRACT: This study aims to evaluate the structural behavior of reinforced concrete beams, reinforced with carbon fiber fabric, using an anchoring mechanism composed of carbon fiber strand inserted in concrete. Five beams were used in order to evaluate the mechanism applied in shear reinforcements. All beams were applied to the transverse loadings and instrumented to measure the breaking load, vertical displacement, deformation specifically in steel, concrete and reinforcement and failure mode. The results concluded that the studied anchoring mechanism acts to prevent the structural element from premature destruction through detachment or loosening of the reinforcement. The main improvements were made in the ductility of the beams and increase in their load capacity, which made an increase of more than 300% over unreinforced beams. Through this result, it was concluded that the mooring system by insertion of carbon fiber strand was efficient for both types of reinforcement.
