This work aimed to study the temporal variation of metazoan parasites of Trichiurus lepturus from the coastal zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Between July 2006 and June 2007, there were four seasonal quarterly samples of 30 specimens of T. lepturus. In addition to a group composed of anisakid larvae, we collected a total of 14 species of metazoan parasites: five digenean; five monogenean, two cestode larvae, one acanthocephalan larvae; and one copepod. With the exception of Lecithochirium microstomum and Lecithochirium sp., all species showed peaks of prevalence and abundance especially those fishes collected in summer, which may indicate a seasonal variation of these parasites in T. lepturus from the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Keywords: seasonality, parasite ecology, upwelling, cutlassfish. Three new species of monogeneans parasitic on the gills and esophagus of Trichiurus lepturus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Southern Brazilian coast are described herein. Between July 2006 and June 2007, 120 specimens of T. lepturus were acquired from local fishermen in Guanabara Bay (23°1'52"S, 43º11'56"W), Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Pseudempleurosoma guanabarensis sp. nov. (Dactylogyridae) presented 15% prevalence and mean intensity 1.8, and differs from all congeners by presenting larger body, largest rectangular dorsal bar, and larger MCO with muscular sheath in the base. Encotyllabe souzalimae sp. nov. (Capsalidae) showed 7.5% prevalence and mean intensity 1.3, differs from all congeners by the size and position of the testes, morphology of the MCO, and morphology and size of the anchors. Octoplectanocotyla travassosi sp. nov. (Plectanocotylidae) showed 8.3% prevalence and mean intensity 1.5, and differs from all congeners by presenting a third pair of smaller hooks between the outer (more robust) and inner pair (thinner and larger); number and shape of the genital spines and shape of the clamp sclerites.
Sciadicleithrum guanduensis sp. nov. is described from the gills of the cichlid fish Geophagus brasiliensis (Quoy et Gaimard, 1824) from Guandu River, Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The new species differs from all congeners by the accessory piece of the male copulatory organ, which comprises a small, delicate sheath with articulated appearance, and by the presence of a large unique umbelliform membrane on the ventral bar.
RESUMODurante o estudo dos metazoários parasitos de Paroaria dominicana Linnaeus, 1758 (Passeriformes), quatro infrapopulações de Platynosomum illiciens (Brown, 1901) (Brown, 1901) (Trematoda), parasitic in the liver ducts were collected, with intensity of infection 10, 11, 18 and 36 specimens respectively. Differences between the means of morphometrical values and the total number of eggs were statistically tested. The liver weigh were not significantly correlated with avian total weigh and length, and with the total parasitic abundance. Positive correlations were observed between the size of infrapopulations and the total number of eggs, and between parasite body size and the eggs. size. Negative correlations were observed between parasitic intensity and liver weigh; between the size of infrapopulations and the parasite body size; between total number and the size of eggs and between parasite body size and total number of eggs. These results suggests that host with smaller liver had greater infrapopulations. These greater infrapopulations showed smaller parasite body size and higher size and number of eggs.
