Introdução: Os recifes de corais fornecem abrigo e proteção para várias formas de vida marinha proporcionando alimento e fomentando e economia de milhares de pessoas, formando o mais variado, complexo e produtivo dos ecossistemas marinhos costeiros. Os corais são excessivamente sensíveis ao aumento temperatura do oceano, e esse aumento vem desencadeando o branqueamento dos corais que acontece devido a perda das algas responsáveis pela cor e fornecimento de quase todo o carbono fotossintético dos corais, o que tem causado grandes prejuízos em todos os recifais. Objetivo: Evidenciar as principais causas e consequências do branqueamento dos corais. Material e métodos: Trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica, com base na literatura publicada entre os anos de 1998 a 2021, totalizando 10 artigos adquiridos junto ao google acadêmico e SCIELO. Resultados: A diversidade ecológica dos recifes de corais é fundamental não só para uma infinidade de seres vivos que ela abriga, mas também para o homem que fomenta a economia através da pesca, da matéria prima para cosméticos e do turismo, porém os recifais estão ameaçados por esse branqueamento . O estresse térmico provocado pelo aumento da temperatura é o principal responsável por esse branqueamento, porém alta exposição a luz, altas taxas de sedimentação, mudanças de salinidade e a poluição também podem acarretar esse evento. Em decorrência desse evento os corais tem apresentado uma redução na capacidade de reprodução, decréscimo nas taxas de crescimento e calcificação, mudanças nas comunidades coralinas e a mortalidade em massa de mais de 90% em algumas colônias. Conclusão: Com a exposição das principais causas e consequências do branqueamento dos corais entende-se a importância da conscientização das pessoas sobre a importância da conservação dos corais para nós e para nossa biodiversidade.
