Apesar de ser um nutriente essencial para os humanos, a vitamina E, ao contrário da maioria dos nutrientes, não tem um papel específico nas funções metabólicas, porém a deficiência pode causar vários sintomas que incluem distúrbio neurológico progressivo, ataxia espinocerebelar e morte de nervos periféricos, especificamente neurônios sensoriais. A presente investigação é uma revisão integrativa que teve como objetivo elucidar a influência e o papel da vitamina E na preservação da saúde neurológica humana, bem como prováveis mecanismos neuroprotetores relacionados com a carência nutricional, incremento da vitamina E na dieta e melhoria da qualidade de vida em pacientes com distúrbios neurológicos. Para a seleção dos artigos utilizou-se as bases de dados Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SciELO), Portal da Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (BVS) e Elsevier e foram selecionados artigos publicados nos últimos cinco anos. Após análise dos artigos incluídos nesta revisão, os resultados dos estudos apontaram que a vitamina E está associada com a melhora e prevenção de várias desordens neurológicas, como a Doença de Parkinson, Doença de Alzheimer, efeitos na plasticidade sináptica e função cognitiva no hipocampo pós lesão cerebral traumática, convulsões, déficit cognitivo no hipotireoidismo e também apresentou papel protetivo no desenvolvimento do tubo neural em fetos de camundongos.
