El cáncer de mama es una proliferación clonal de células neoplásicas que inicia en la mama. El mismo se categoriza de acuerdo al subtipo histológico, al tamaño tumoral y al estadío. El subtipo histológico más agresivo es el triple negativo, siendo negativo para los receptores de estrógenos, progesterona y crecimiento epidérmico humano. A lo largo de la historia, el tratamiento contra este cáncer ha cambiado. Actualmente, el mismo consiste en una combinación de radioterapia, quimioterapia y cirugía. Sin embargo, se están investigando nuevas estrategias terapéuticas basadas en la inmunoterapia, las cuales han brindado resultados prometedores en estudios clínicos. La integración de inmunoterapias activas y pasivas como las vacunas y los anticuerpos monoclonales, y el uso de inhibidores de poli (adenosín difosfato o ADP-ribosa) polimerasa, solos o en conjunto con terapias clásicas, son alternativas para incrementar las posibilidades farmacoterapéuticas contra este tipo de cáncer.
