<p>La universidad pública, como espacio social en el que se gestan prácticas para la participación y el ejercicio de la ciudadanía, está llamada a construir y potenciar escenarios democráticos orientados tanto a la formación-acción política de sus estudiantes como al desarrollo y gobierno de su proyecto institucional. La educación superior a distancia no está exenta de dicha obligación pero, cuando se desarrolla en Ambientes Virtuales de Aprendizaje (AVA) con el uso de las TIC, configura nuevos escenarios e interacciones de los individuos, que pueden estar relacionados con la emergencia de nuevas prácticas y relacionadas con el ejercicio de la ciudadanía. Este artículo da cuenta de la exploración realizada por el grupo de investigación <em>Cuestión Humana</em>, en torno a la caracterización de los escenarios - instituidos e instituyentes, presenciales o virtuales – a los que acuden los estudiantes de la Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD)4 para el ejercicio de la participación ciudadana alrededor de la vida universitaria. De manera específica, presenta los hallazgos obtenidos en cuanto a los niveles de participación ciudadana alcanzados y los y mecanismos que para ello emplean los estudiantes unadistas, en relación con las nociones de democracia y ciudadanía que direccionan su actuación ciudadana en la UNAD.</p>
