Objective – Prior to the East ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA) in ASEAN, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines (BIMP) took in an inflow of immigrants to support growth. The more they depended on foreign labour, the issue of gender inequality in the job sector became an issue that is hindering prosperity. Methodology/Technique – The research was aimed to identify the relation between unemployment rate from the gender perspective and economic growth of BIMP-EAGA by using two methods, namely Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS). Annual time series data for the period of 1990 to 2018 was employed. Findings & Novelty – The result was contrary to Okun's law which says that there is a negative relation between the male unemployment rate and GDP. This study found that the female unemployment rate did not affect GDP and was insignificant. Policies that benefit and increase the participation of female workers in the job sector should be enhanced to prepare a conducive environment for the economy. Type of Paper: Empirical. Beef cattle are relevant to farm products for the livelihood of most small-scale farmers in Buru Island in Maluku Province. Other than being a significant source of income for farm households, the presence of cattle farming on that island is also strategic for the Indonesia livestock sector as Buru is one of the areas in the eastern part of Indonesia in which has the most significant population of local cattle. Nevertheless, in recent years, its population has been observed to be stagnant even tends to decline; hence many issues of its sustainability arise. The national government and stakeholders of livestock development positively should respond to this phenomenon. As a contribution to solving these issues, this article reports our preliminary study, which generally aims to propose feasible strategies for sustaining the presence of cattle farming and its population, especially in the context of islands region economic development. Our results show that current cattle farming on the island is in the state of survival; thus the strategy for the development must focus on moving to the better state through ensuring farmers' access to available natural resources and on improving public infrastructures, distributions, and logistics of the farm products. Recommendations for designing such strategies and policies are discussed briefly.
Agricultural activities have the share in contributing to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The method of residue burning (RB), which has been practiced in Samarahan, Sarawak in Malaysia contributed to the emission of carbon into the atmosphere. Steps should be taken to address this issue by promoting sustainable method of farming. Pineapple farmers can be given incentives to change to a more sustainable method such as zero burning (ZB) whereby a mechanism like the clean development mechanism (CDM) can be adopted at the local level to encourage farmers adopting this sustainable farming technique. This incentive is primarily derived from the value of carbon sequestered in the soil through the practice of ZB. Although farmer will suffer financial loss due to additional cost, they can be compensated for this loss under ZB. Thus, farmers still can receive better income with the compensation and at the same continuing to practice ZB.
Like other women, Iban women do several activities as the side-income generation to support family life such as farming, handicraft making, and traditional food processing and business. This study aims to investigate the involvement of Iban women in the side-income generation in Bintulu, Sarawak. Thus, the target population in this study is Iban women who are involved in side-income activities only as not all Iban women in Bintulu involve in sideincome activities. This study will identify the type of side-income activities and find out barriers to women's participation in side-income activities and propose relevant solutions to the problems. The questionnaire will be distributed to the target population and descriptive data analysis will be used to describe and summarize the findings. From the findings of the study, the researcher will come out with relevant suggestions to reduce and solve problems faced by Iban women in the side-income generation. For instance, propose appropriate programs and training to enhance their knowledge and skills in side-income activities that they preferred. Side-income generation among Iban women not only benefits the family but will create positive effects on Iban women development and empowerment in Sarawak generally.
The rapid increase in population worldwide is causing large scale of production of agricultural products and increased preparation of plants, livestock, vegetables and much more agricultural items for people's use and food security. The implications from this is that, South East Asian, especially, invests in technology for large scale production for a sustainable environment. By applying the panel data analysis technique Fully Modified OLS and Dynamic OLS, this paper investigates the causal relationship between agricultural production, pollution emissions and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) among, South East Asian countries. The paper results show the variable has a long-run and short-run relationship with a positive value. While in a developing country, investment in an agricultural product based on sustainable agriculture that meets present food requirements without affecting the environment should be considered as an alternative for the benefit of future generations.
