La necesidad de conocer la porosidad drenable del suelo o macroporosidad con fines de manejar correctamente el agua en el suelo, sea ésta con fines de riego o con fines de drenaje ha tomado cada vez mayor relevancia. Para ello existen equipos que se ofrecen en casas comerciales generalmente de costos altos. No obstante, conociendo la física del agua en una matriz arenosa se puede construir una mesa de succión (mesa de tensión) con arena llamada comúnmente caja de arena para estimar la macro y microporosidad y como tal la porosidad total presente en un suelo. Las micro porosidades obtenidas para un suelo arenoso expresado en contenido de humedad volumétrica sometido a una succión de 60 cmca (centímetros de columna de agua) y a 100 cmca fueron 11,12% y 5,73% respectivamente y las macro porosidades obtenidas y expresadas en términos de porcentaje de humedad volumétrica para un suelo arenoso sometido a una succión de 60 cmca y a 100 cmca fueron 25,14% y 30,53%.
Un fundamento para la correcta y eficiente aplicación y uso del recurso hídrico en los sistemas de producción agrícola es conocer el estado de humedad en que se encuentra el suelo ya que la cantidad a aplicar debe ser la misma que la cantidad consumida en el sistema suelo - planta por medio de la evapotranspiración. Este estado de humedad se debe de estimar lo mayor cercano posible a la realidad y para ello se debe de tomar el perfil del suelo a una profundidad a la cual se adapte lo mejor posible al o a los cultivos presentes. Normalmente la profundidad adecuada se refiere a la profundidad de raíces de las plantas y la forma de estimación se puede dar de varias maneras y una de ellas es por medio de la humedad volumétrica la cual, se puede estimar de manera directa como indirecta (como ejemplo podemos mencionar sensores calibrados). No obstante, con la información obtenida del campo se debe de realizar la estimación total respectiva que va a depender de la metodología utilizada respecto a la profundidad definida, el número de muestreos y la distancia entre los muestreos, los cuales; estos últimos se recomienda que sean de la misma longitud. Por ello el objetivo fundamental de este artículo es presentar diferentes opciones de manejo de la información obtenida de campo para estimar los contenidos hídricos insaturados en un perfil del suelo, compararlos en sus estimaciones para la toma de mejores decisiones.
La necesidad de conocer el consumo de agua que un cultivo tiene en el transcurso de su periodo vegetativo sea este anual o perenne, es fundamental debido al cambio climático en desarrollo el cual manifiesta tanto una baja en la cantidad de agua precipitada en diferentes zonas de nuestro país como una concentración de estas precipitaciones. Además, es necesario ser eficiente y eficaz en el uso del recurso hídrico para riego en la agricultura tanto en ambientes abiertos como protegidos y por medio de ello, procurar el desarrollo sostenible. Para lograr esto, es menester conocer los valores de evapotranspiración de referencia, evapotranspiración real y el coeficiente del cultivo con el fin de estimar y proyectar aplicaciones de agua por medio de sistemas de riego lo más ajustadas a la realidad posible. Por generaciones se ha utilizado valores del coeficiente del cultivo independientemente del método matemático de estimación de la evapotranspiración de referencia sin conocer si existen diferencias o no en los resultados obtenidos en los consumos de agua estimados. No obstante, por medio de métodos matemáticos de estimación de la evapotranspiración de referencia utilizando datos de la humedad relativa, temperatura y radiación solar dentro de un invernadero, se encontró diferencia significativa en los valores del coeficiente del cultivo. En las metodologías de Ivanov y Camargo no se encontró diferencia significativa entre ellos pero si se encontró diferencias significativas (0,05) con respecto a las metodologías de Benavidez, Linacre, Hargreaves y Turc; las metodologías de Benavidez y Linacre presentaron diferencias significativa (0,05) tanto entre ellos y como con respecto a las metodologías de Ivanov, Camargo, Hargreaves y Turc; y Hargreaves y Turc no presentaron diferencia significativa entre ellos pero si se encontró diferencias significativas (0,05) con respecto a las metodologías de Ivanov, Camargo, Benavidez y Linacre.
<p class="p1">Los procesos que lleven a un desarrollo sostenible deben incluir crecimiento económico, social y cultural. El uso del agua es el mejor indicador del grado de desarrollo social y económico de un país. Estudios sobre calidad de agua llegados a cabo en el pasado muestran la relación existente entre esta y su entorno socioambiental. </p><p class="p1">En la Península de Osa (Costa Rica), el Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación (SINAC) ha comprado terrenos dentro de la Reserva Forestal Golfo Dulce (RFGD) a particulares sin contar con políticas de compra, y desconociendo el impacto que su uso tiene sobre la calidad de las aguas.</p><p class="p1">El objetivo del proyecto fue elaborar un programa de gestión ambiental a través de la compra de terrenos, orientado a la protección o mejora de la calidad de las aguas. </p><p class="p1">El uso de un modelo de predicción de la calidad del agua basado en variables socioambientales fue la herramienta que permitió evaluar el impacto de los cambios ambientales en la calidad del agua, a través del análisis de distintos escenarios en el área seleccionada para el estudio. </p><p class="p1">Se encontró que los usos del suelo para pasto o charral-tacotal no ejercen una influencia negativa sobre la calidad del agua. Lo contrario ocurre cuando el suelo se usa con fines agrícolas. Se concluyó que el SINAC debe incrementar la compra de terrenos dentro de la RFGD cuyo uso idóneo sea como bosque, para contrarrestar el posible uso extensivo en actividades agrícolas en la zona costera del área de estudio donde el SINAC no tiene injerencia. </p>
