Objetivos: Identificar os óbitos por Diabetes Mellitus e investigar os determinantes sociais de saúde a partir da análise das declarações de óbito em Palmas -Tocantins, no período de 2011 a 2015. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo transversal e descritivo. Os dados foram coletados dos relatórios de óbitos por Diabetes Mellitus da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde ocorridos em 2011 a 2015. As variáveis utilizadas foram causa básica de óbito, idade, raça/cor, escolaridade, ocupação e sexo. Foram determinadas a taxa de mortalidade e os valores epidemiológicos estudados através do programa estatístico EpiInfo versão 7.0. Resultados: A taxa de mortalidade por Diabetes Mellitus aumentou 28,5% no período de estudo, com média no período de 17,8 óbitos por 100.000 habitantes, com 75,4% dos óbitos ocorridos na faixa etária entre 61 anos e mais. A maioria em pessoas do sexo feminino, pardas, e com 1 a 3 anos de estudos. Conclusão: A mortalidade por Diabetes Mellitus apresentou incremento positivo no período, o que alerta para a necessidade de planejamento de ações preventivas e de promoção da saúde. ABSTRACT Objective: To identify deaths from Diabetes mellitus and investigate the social determinant of health from death certificates of Palmas, Tocantins, in the period from 2011 to 2015. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data were collected from death reports by Diabetes Mellitus of the Health Department that took place in 2011-2015. The variables used were the basic cause of death, age, race/color, education, gender and occupation. The mortality rate and epidemiological values studied were determined through the statistical program EpiInfo version 7.0. Results: The mortality rate for Diabetes mellitus increased 28,5% during the study period, with an average in the period to 17,8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, with 75,4% of all deaths in the age group 61 and over years and the majority in females, brown-skinned, with 1 to 3 years of education. Conclusion: Mortality from diabetes mellitus showed a positive growth during the study period which indicates the need for planning of preventive actions and of health promotion. Starting from the molecular basis, risk and nutrition factors and cancer prevention, going through screening and nutritional assessment, since diet therapy treatment, symptom control, main nutritional problems and palliative care, and even spirituality, with the nutritional approach for adults and pediatric patients as one of its strengths. This way, readers are invited to enjoy the knowledge shared by experienced health professionals and researchers, who work in oncology. In addition to these experiences, valuable reports are presented from patients who have experienced (or are experiencing) cancer treatment, with the aim of bringing the reader closer to a different perspective of this multidimensional reality. It is known that the experience of an oncological treatment is accompanied by varied emotions and feelings for everyone involved, both for the team of professionals and for family members, in addition to the role of the patients themselves. And that is why, from the different spectrums covered, it is expected to help the professional performance in this ascending area of health to occur even more in a holistic and humanized way.
