The purpose of this study was to determine if insulin resistance syndrome is associated with a blunted myocellular anabolic response (e.g., cumulative protein synthesis rates [24‐h FSR]) following high‐intensity resistance exercise (RE). Lean (Fa/?) and obese (fa/fa) 5‐mo‐old male Zucker rats engaged in 4 sessions of lower body RE and were enriched with 2H2O to assess cumulative FSR in red (RG) and white gastrocnemius (WG). Obese Zucker rats exhibited a significantly higher basal 24‐h FSR in RG (+22%, P = 0.006) and WG (+ 38%, P = 0.026) compared to the lean phenotype, but were unable to augment protein synthesis rates in WG (−7%, P > 0.05) to the same extent as lean rats (+34%, P = 0.027) following RE. Contrary to previous research, mixed muscle protein synthesis rates are enhanced rather than suppressed in selected muscle groups of the obese Zucker rat. Insulin resistance syndrome may impair the myocellular anabolic response following high‐intensity RE.
