ResumoA Internet nasceu nos EUA como variação de um projeto militar muito específico. No início, quase a totalidade da comunicação em rede era em língua inglesa, pois a maioria das pessoas envolvidas nos projetos provinha dos EUA, ou de comunidades científicas nas quais o inglês era língua franca. Com o aumento da utilização da Internet em diferentes países, a hegemonia do inglês passou a ser revista. Em 1998, o inglês já havia sofrido queda de 15% do seu total, devido principalmente à proliferação da rede e à produção de conteúdos locais nas línguas nacionais. O presente trabalho busca perceber quais são as causas do crescente aumento de línguas locais na produção da Internet e identificar as formas de reação contra-hegemônica empreendida pelo uso desta ferramenta como campo fértil para a produção e difusão de idéias, informações, conteúdos, conhecimentos e saberes. Neste sentido, surgem adjetivações específicas para designar tais formas de relações nos diferentes níveis da vida social, política e econômica. Tais qualificações também concedem às nossas sociedades um elemento classificatório baseado no estado de desenvolvimento tecnológico e na sua capacidade de adaptar-se ao uso das novas tecnologias de comunicação e de informação. São exemplos os termos fartamente utilizados na literatura contemporânea, seja ela especializada ou do senso comum, como o de "sociedade em rede", adaptado por Castells (1996) para estudar o fenômeno crescente das interconexões estabelecidas nas relações sociais, principalmente as mediadas pelas novas tecnologias, ou de "sociedade da informação * " (LEVY, 1997), para dar conta de exprimir um conjunto de interações sociais que se fundam nas novas trocas de informações que passaram a ocorrer em uma velocidade sem precedentes na história humana. Nos anos 1990, o termo retorna com força no contexto do desenvolvimento da Internet. É importante registrar pequena variação em termo correlato, preferido pelos acadêmicos como alternativos ao primeiro; trata-se do termo knowledge society, que nas línguas latinas tem sido traduzido por "sociedade do conhecimento", ou muitas vezes como "sociedade do saber". No segundo caso, a utilização do termo gerou intensos debates em face de distinção conceitual entre conhecimento e saber.
