The language learning largely took place in the classroom, especially prior to Covid-19 pandemic and that this occurrence resulted in simplicity for the learners to learn and interact with each other because they could directly make in contact with their classmates and their teachers. However, since the pandemic developed in March 2020, all the learning process was subsequently altered into online learning. To date, studies on language learning has been undertaken by the researchers both at intra and international level. Despite the existence of these former studies, little work reports the comprehensive picture of language learning experiences prior to and during Covid-19 pandemic. To fill this lacuna, the current article reports on a narrative inquiry of EFL learners’ experiences of learning English prior to and during Covid-19 pandemic. Drawing upon data from a semi-structured interview with two Indonesian EFL learners of the sixth semester majoring in English education program, the finding indicates that EFL learners have sustained multifaceted learning experiences prior to and during the pandemic. They have gone through face-to-face learning prior to the pandemic, asynchronous learning during the pandemic and hybrid learning experience during the Covid-19 pandemic. This article concludes with suggestions for promoting hybrid learning model in the EFL setting, particularly in a higher education during the Covid-19 pandemic.
A multitude of studies on self-efficacy beliefs have been undertaken to date, especially in language learning. However, little evidence is given on looking into the relationship between self-efficacy and English grammar. To this end, the present study goes about identifying to what extent the correlation between learners’ self-efficacy and their achievements in the grammar test is. Drawing on the correlational design, an English grammar test was administered to the learners to know the learners’ acquaintance with the English grammar. Meanwhile, a self-efficacy questionnaire was performed by the researcher to the learners to figure out to what extent their efficaciousness is. A Pearson-product moment correlation was performed to analyze the relationship between such variables. The result demonstrates that there is a high positive significant correlation between learners’ self-efficacy and their attainments in the grammar test, displayed by r Correlation = +1. This finding brings a recent insight in the field of language learning.
The objective of this study is focusing on developing supplementary speaking materials for the eighth grade students of junior high school. It is according on students’ need and their difficulties in mastering their speaking ability. This problem found in SMP Plus Al-Mashduqiah. Students felt very difficult to speak because they did not know how to pronounce the word. Moreover, the speaking material in the existing book that used by school are too limited in scope of speaking. In fact, textbook and workbook used by the eighth grade students SMP Plus Al-Mashduqiah only have little portion, making a supplementary speaking material is needed and crucial. This design of the development is research and development with the adaption of the development proposed by Borg and Gall (1983). The procedures employed in this study were need analysis, stating instructional goals, developing instructional material, expert validation, try-out and final product. The results indicate that speaking materials developed by the researchers are appropriate to use for eight-grade students in the school and the teachers, therefore, strongly recommend that it be used by the teachers in other school settings as well.
Some methods and approaches have been put into practice by stakeholders, including both teachers and lecturers in the teaching and learning process of English, specifically writing. Nevertheless, writing English is still burdensome for some learners, particularly EFL learners. For this reason, the survey study was conducted to point out the mistakes made by the students in composing an essay.
This study investigated the effectiveness of the Herringbone technique in improving reading comprehension skills among class XI students. The research followed a quasi-experimental design, with an experimental group receiving instruction using the Herringbone technique and a control group receiving traditional instruction. Pre-test and post-test assessments were conducted to measure the participants' reading comprehension abilities. The results indicated a significant improvement in the reading comprehension scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. These findings suggest that the Herringbone technique is more effective than traditional methods in enhancing reading comprehension skills. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of incorporating interactive and collaborative instructional approaches in English language teaching to foster critical thinking and deeper understanding of texts. Future research should explore the long-term effects and applicability of the Herringbone technique in diverse educational contexts. Overall, the Herringbone technique shows promise as an effective approach to enhance reading comprehension instruction and support language development among students.
