Studierende kennen Architekturtheorie entweder als pseudophilosophische Überlegungen von Architekten oder als Geschichte der Baukunst. In dieser Einführung wird Architektur als Verhalten des Menschen interpretiert, der seine natürliche Bedürftigkeit durch "Kultur" kompensiert.
Architekturtheorie ist somit eine Wissenschaft, die Begriffsarbeit leistet und architektonisches Denken ermöglicht. Der Band bietet einen Zugang zu Architektur jenseits bloßer Geschmacksfragen.
Lassen sich durch architektonische Entwürfe bestimmte Stimmungen oder Atmosphären erzielen? Ausgangspunkt dieser Frage ist eine phänomenologisch-hermeneutische Architekturtheorie, die sich als empirische Theorie versteht und in der Lebenswelt gründet. Am Beispiel zweier Freizeitparks untersuchen die Beiträge, wie die Gestalter beim Entwerfen von atmosphärischen Räumen vorgehen und was Besucher auf der Basis ihrer Lebenserfahrung in diesen Räumen erleben. Es zeigt sich, dass Atmosphären vor allem als Erlebnisse wirken: Sie werden von Architekten vor ihrem biographischen Hintergrund antizipiert, entstehen jedoch erst in der leiblichen Begegnung des Erlebenden mit seiner Umgebung.
