The Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is one of the most abundant resources in the ocean, which provides food for several important species in the Antarctic Ocean, and is targeted commercially by humans for many decades. To sustainably manage and harvest the species, energy-efficient, catch-efficient, and selective fishing gears should be developed for the Antarctic krill trawl fishery. This study investigates the effect of twine area and the liner length on the engineering performance of trawl through flume tank testing of trawl model to predict the performance of the full-scale midwater trawl used in the Antarctic krill fishery. Four 1/35th scale trawl model nets with varying lengths of the liner, based on the traditional trawl used in the Antarctic krill fishery, were designed using modified Tauti’s law and were tested in a flume tank at different towing speed, door spread, heavy bob weight, and the ratio of buoyancy to the fishing line (F/G). The results showed that the reduction in liner length by 25 and 50% from the traditional trawl net led to the decrease in twine area by 11.01 and 19.31% and, consequently, resulted in reductions in the lower bridle tension by 12.44 and 19.78%, and increases in energy efficiency by 17.98 and 25.73%, respectively. In addition, the reduction in liner length by 25 and 50% were found to increase the net mouth opening by 2.63 and 5.38% and the swept area by 6.52 and 8.38%, respectively, both of which are proportional to catch rates. Although the trawl net with 50% liner length is more energy-efficient and large mouth opening than those of the trawl net with the liner length over 75% of the trawl body, the large mesh section without a liner can result in the escape of the krill from the trawl, reducing overall catch efficiency. We, therefore, recommend the trawl with 75% of liner length as a suitable design for Antarctic krill considering energy efficiency and catch efficiency.
The Lom Pangar hydroelectric dam project located in the eastern region of Cameroon was implemented by Electricity Development Corporation (EDC). The impoundment of the Lom Pangar dam created a large reservoir with an area ~590 km 2 and a useful storage capacity ~6 billion m 3 . Thereby, this impoundment has created favourable conditions for the proliferation of fishery resources. However, a fisheries assessment study based on fishing activities is essential to attain reliable information for implementing a management plan to achieve rational and sustainable exploitation. This study was carried out on the ichtyofaunic inventory and the assessment of fish landings in Lom Pangar hydroelectric dam reservoir from April 2016 to September 30, 2016. Three main groups of fishing gear have been identified, among which gillnets, traps and longlines occupy major fishing activities. Indeed, the spatial and landing sites surveies were conducted on species composition, size composition, and quantities of fish landed during the study period. Moreover, 37 species of fish divided into 16 families were found in seven different selected fish landing sites. Carp (Cyprinus carpio) was the major fish species abundantly caught by these fishing gears which accounted for 81.60% of the total catch, and the least species was sardine (Sardinella aurita). A total of 623,229 Kg of fish were landed which were dominated by those of the Wami landing site with 480,773 Kg representing 76.96% of the total landed catches. In the design of the CAT 3408 engine, the Low Temperature (BT) circuits used to cool the engine lubricating oil and the charge air and the High Temperature (HT) circuits for cooling the cylinder liners, cylinder heads and body of turbofans are mainly used to cool the engine, so that it works properly. This work, based on the analysis carried out, to determine the lubrication compliance of the Yacco VX 100 -SAE 15 W-40 oil and that of the Camwater water used in the engine of the Boat Yang 1 by carrying out a series of conventional tests such as that: the density, the viscosity, the viscosity index, the flash point, the density, the sulphate center content, the water content, the total acidity index (TAN), total basic number (TBN) and pour point for the oil case and pH, hardness, sodium chloride content [NaCl], sodium sulphate content [NaSO 4 ] for the water case which will be compared to the specified requirements to determine whether compliance is achieved for each of these characteristics. The results of the oil and water samples taken from the engine after use show that the used oil gives a specific gravity of 0.8822, a viscosity (at 40˚C) of 92.29 mm 2 /s, a viscosity (at 100˚C) of 13.99 mm 2 /s, a viscosity index (VI) of 155.39, a pour point −21˚C, a Flash Point (VO) 215˚C, a Sulfated ash content of 18%, a density 881.5 kg/m 3 , a total basic number (TBN) of 12.60 mgKOH/g, a Total Acid Index (TAN) of 3.096 mgKOH/g, a Water Content of 1.8 % and the water used gives a pH of 6.00, a hardness of 3.2 french degrees, a sodium chloride content [NaCl] of 0.468 mg/L, and a calcium sulphate content [CaSO 4 ] of 2.38345 mg/L. the results of the water content and content of sulfated centers justify the thermal overload and power losses in the marine diesel engine CAT 3408 of the boat Yang 1 because of their values which are not in conformity with the standards.
Accurate modeling and prediction of materials properties is of utmost importance to design engineers. In this study, newly developed two-dimensional laminate constitutive equations (LCE) were derived directly from an existing shell model without using a classical correction factor. The resulted LCEs were subsequently used for the first time to analyze a laminated composite tube (LCT) subjected to in plane-loading. This led to additional composite-shell stiffness coefficients which are not currently available in some LCEs. The strains and stresses distribution fields were computed via Matlab. The accuracy and robustness of our analytical method were proven by opposing the as-obtained results of thick and thin LCTs with that of existing theories which use a correction factor. An excellent convergence was observed. Whereas a lower convergence was observed in the case of a laminated shell plate. Results also showed that the thickness ratio χ (2χ=h/R ) considerably influences the mechanical behavior of the LCT. In fact when χ<0.1, the distribution of stresses and strains of the tube were the same for the two opposed theories. When χ>0.1, the distribution of stresses and strains were not the same, hence the contribution of our ABCDE matrix. The new mechanical couplings in our LCE could be well illustrated in a finite element package with visualization tools to observe some intricate deformations which are yet to be seen. Thus the outcome of this work will be of particularly interest to promote advanced scientific and structural engineering applications.
